Today I decided to go to the LFS to hopefully buy two new danios to add to my tank. Keep in mind, before i joined this board a week ago, i knew the basics of what a fish tank cycle was, and that is it.
So i'm back looking at the fish, one of the employees comes and asks if he can get me anything, and from what I have learned here, i start quizing him about their tanks, filtration, etc. as well as listening to conversations that he was having with other customers. After a few minutes, its pretty clear this guy is clueless, and decide that I can't count on him for anything.
When looking at the fish, they are obviously stressed, many have their fins clamped to their bodies. I saw some holes in the barb's dorsal fin, and some other fish had very jagged fins. The guy comes back over, and asks if I had made any decisions, and I politely tell him that there were a few things I saw concerned me, so I was going to pass for today. To my amazement, he then asked me to point out what i had seen, then when i was done, asked me what they should do
. I wish I had an answer to give him, but about all i could say is i don't know why, but your fish are probably stressed from something.
Afer this, since i had his attention, i asked him about the pH in their tanks, since they are the only LFS within 40 min of me. From how it looked, I don't think he has ever checked the water chemistry, EVER. On the plus side, he was asking questions, enough where I could tell him about fishless cycling, over stocking, the inch of fish per gallon rule (that one was new to him). Hopefully he will remember some stuff, and research more.
