Is there a biological function for the adipose/second dorsal fin? some fish have them, and some dont? I realise that adipose is just fat, so is just a storage place?

Thanks

Tom

Adipose; Definition: A small fin, composed of fatty tissue, located between the dorsal and caudal fins of some fish, most notably characins and catfish. Much like the appendix in humans, the purpose of the adipose fin is not clear.
