got home from work today to find another of my frogs floating at the surface, and another missing entirely - there should be five, three are wandering around and one floating at the top with what looks like bacteria growing on his foot

the water results are all ok so I'm wondering whether they have some kind of bacterial infection or something?

what should I do? :(

I would post this thread in the inverbrates part of the forum.

sorry for bumping this, but there's nothing much going on in the invertebrates forum

the missing frog had got to the other side, so he's back where he should be - but seeing as I've had three die in a few days, is it worth considering treating them for viral/bacterial infections, and should I consider doing the same for the fish because they've been in the same tank, or should I move the frogs to a Q tank and treat them?

thanks!

Not sure on meds for frogs try the tropical discussion part of the forum more members go over there.
Meds can be toxic to frogs they usually say small doses of salt with frogs.

Thanks Wilder - great article and lots of links, although quite a few were broken lol. some good info on there though - it does mention that the ADFs get stressed easily, hardly surprising, and I'm sure the baby ones wouldn't have had a good journey from the breeder to the LFS.

it does mention about treating with aquarium salt, but I'm not really even sure there's anything wrong!! I'm thinking about buying a separate tank for the frogs anyway (seeing as one escaped the divided section into the main tank, and theres too many places for them to get trapped in there!)

does aquarium salt harm the fish in a freshwater aquarium if used at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons, or should I wait until they're separated?

Adding salt depends on which fish you keep.

I have 12 neon tetra, 10 glowlight tetra, 6 corys and a siamese fighter

all of the rest of the frogs look healthy enough, but then so did the latest one to die (the first two were very thin and weak from the start) - I'd rather do it once the frogs are separated, but that could be a while before the new tank is bought & cycled!

woke up this morning to find another frog dead - and this one was definately swimming around looking happy as could be before I went to bed last night! Found him lying upside down on the bottom of the tank :(

that means of the 6 I bought sunday, only two are left, and I'm not expecting them to survive much longer (even though they look healthy right now)

the one remaining frog from my first lot still seems to be ok, but hard to tell right now because he's hidden in the dark corner of the tank!

any suggestions what I should do, or are these frogs doomed and I should be happy I've given them a nice home? as I said, water stats are all ok, all the fish appear to be fine, and the frogs that are still alive do too!

(actually, the frog I removed this morning does seem to have some white marks on his back, which after reading that stuff might indicate a fungal infection, but just don't know what to do for the best :(

maybe a bad batch from the shop

I've got my two frogs in my sons community tank which I know is overstocked but with regular waterchanges fish are quite healthy. Had ADF's for couple of months and they seem to be doing well . Sounds like your tank less stocked yet frogs dying so I would definately say something wrong with frogs. Maybe try new stock from somewhere else

R.I.P.
You have neon tetra and corys so have to be careful with the salt.
I would only add one tablespoon of salt and thats its.
Stir in the salt in a jug of tank water till disolves and add to the tank.
How many gallons is the q tank.

thanks both - thankfully I got home from work this afternoon, and the remaining three are still alive :) (at the moment!) - the quarantine tank I'm planning on getting will be about 40L as thats all I have space for right now, but the separated part of the existing tank is about 25L, but any salt I add there would mix through the rest of the tank

I'm seriously considering going out and getting the quarantine tank tonight, but I'd need to cycle it etc. first so that wouldn't be much good - or, could I just transfer 20L of my main tank water and add 20L new water, add a heater and leave it unfiltered for a few days (a lot of websites say ADF's dont necessarily need a filter?), in which case I could have my frog quarantine tank setup in a few hours from now! (as I said, I'd much rather avoid mixing salt in with the fish if at all possible!)

edit: my thought was it could be a bad batch from the LFS - seems odd for this many to die in a day or two, plus a frog I've had for a few weeks to suddenly die overnight! At least the LFS will replace the frogs, although I can only get two replaced because I've buried the other two - I doubt the shop want exhumed frog bodies taken back ;) I'll be keeping the latest dead frogs though - all my pets deserve a proper burial, not being thrown in the bin at LFS!!

thanks :)

I agree would leave the salt as you can add a full tablespoon as that to much with the fish you keep.
Good luck hope they improve.

Thanks Wilder - just keeping my fingers crossed at the moment!! I think I will leave the salt for now - I'll probably get the Q tank tomorrow after work, will see how the frogs are by then, and will treat them in the Q tank if they need it!
