I have a 5 month old 125l tank. Current stock- well established- is...

3 otos
3 corydora schwartzi (spelling?!)
6 male guppies
6 xray tetras
1 male red honey gourami.

I really like neons, but think (based on surface area) that I'm almost fully stocked. I do gravel cleans/ water changes twice per week- 10%, 10%, 20% on a rota, so the water quality is fine, so what effect would 6-8 tetras have? More cleaning?

I'm not an expert, but I think 5 or 6 would be okay. Just change the water a little more than 10%... maybe 15 or 20%. That's what I would do. :)

well you actually have all fish that remain under 3" and are slim bodied so its a good time to use the inch of fish per gallon rule.

based on that youve got about 25" of fish so theres room for a nice school of neons and maybe a small plec like a bristlenose or bulldog to keep your glass clean? :)

Based on what you have and your maintainence routine I think 6 or even 8 is a safe number.

Consider cardinal tetras if they are available. IME they have been much hardier.

Thanks to all for advice.

What's that 30 gallons? I'd first remove the gourami (just because he may chew on them). I'd put about a dozen or even two dozen of Neons (since you made some room by removing the gourami).

I think that moving the gourami would be a good idea cause then the tetras could get used to the tank then after about 1 or 2 weeks add the gourami and they might get along if no then maybe you could take it back to where you got it .
Ide say after you remove the gourami you could get about 8 neons and that would be a good amount

Let me start by saying that my knowledge of gouramis is limited. However... Don't Honey gouramis only get to about 2" or so, and don't they tend to stay near the top? Neons will stay at the middle or bottom, so territory isn't an issue. Also, there's plenty of room in this tank (36" long if I'm right?) which will allow the faster, more agile neons to keep out of his way. I know that some gouramis can be a bit nasty, but in this situation I don't see there being a problem with this mix. If the guppies have been working out for you with this fish, I think that the neons should be fine as they are less apt to get in his way. As I said, I haven't kept these species together so feel free to correct me if you have.

125Litre is nearer 40 Gallon isnt it?

If its Neons then their bio load is minimal and as long as the tank is over filtered and well maintained by yourself i dont think 10 would be a massive impact on the water etc.
