Hello,

I have a Jewel Record 60 Tank. It holds 68L of water or 15Gal & measures H:14" W:12" D:24"
Without aeration, I have calculated that I can stock up to a total 25" of small fish.

The question I would love to know the answer to is by what factor (percent if you like) does the maximum stock length of fish that I can keep in that tank increase by if an airpump & airstone were added to my setup?

In other words, how does cc O2 / hr relate to Total Maximum fish length?

Many thanks again,

Andy

It doesn't.

Air pumps do very little for the dissolved oxygen levels of a tank. The bubbles are not in the water anywhere near long enough for gas exchange to take place. The bubbles hitting the surface will not cause any where near as much surface agitation as pointing a powerhead or filter outlet at the surface.

Thanks andywg (a pie is in the post to you as we speak),

Thought this may be the case. Kind of a leading question....
(I initially thought that this method increased the avaiable surface area of the tank water to available to O2, hence increasing oxygenation, but the next step in logic to that proposal is, as you say, allowing for TIME)

So, the point of injecting air in this manner is..........?

Essentially, it is for asthetics. It will create some extra movement of air from the bottom of the tank to the top, thus ensuring a little better turnover, and will provide some extra surface agitation, but it will not work as well as pointing a filter or powerhead at the surface (or even better having the outlet above the surface).

@andywg,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions...
