Adding A Jack Dempsey

Hey yall,

I've just become a member to this forum because I LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fish. Well I have a 55 gallon (US) and I have two gold severums, (People think its not ok to fit two in a 55 gallon but it works out fine for me) 3 Tinfoil Barbs, 2 convicts, and 2 firemouths. I am thinkin to get a Jack Dempsey but I've herd there pretty agressive. Is it ok to put one in my tank? Thanks

I have one in my gourami tank with a pair of firemouths and a pair of spotted leaf fish. Had nowhere else to put him, but he seems happy enough and apart from 2 murders ( which i think were due to the convicts which have now been rehomed) its quite a 'peaceful' tank !

Your tank is massivley overstocked with fish that grow very large, and having convicts in there your just waiting for a disaster!

The Tin Foil barbs need 100+ Gallon alone!

I have 2 JD's in a tank with 2 Green Terrors, 1 Gold Severum, 2 Firemouths, 1 Featherfin Syno, 1 Blue Loach, 1 YoYo Loach, 3 Sterbai Corys & 2 Albino Corys (and normally 2 Sajica but they are in different tank on their own with some fry at present).

All of these fish (except the Severum as hes been added recently) were housed together from juvenile ages, so its posible they grew up to tolerate each other more than anything. Although sometimes they are feisty and very active there has been no real fights or any damage inflicted towards each other.

Amazingly my Green Terrors tried to breed recently and even then there was no real fighting in the tank... I guess it did help that my Syno hoovered them up when they became free swimming after a few days.

And the toughest fish in my tank is...... Blue Loach. No one goes in his cave believe me

your tank is way over stocked already. people say 2 severus in a 55 at a maximum if there alone in the tank. tinfoil barbs need somthing like 150 gallon tank, a jack dempsey needs something like a 55 to be housed alone. and yes jack dempsey are very aggressive named after the famous boxer jack dempsey.

As someone already told you, you cant add any other fish. You're already overstocked and should be thinking of getting rid of the convicts, firemouths and tinfoils, or the tinfoils and severums.

I sold my tinfoil barbs and im not gettin a jack dempsey

Wow! I don't know much, but I have that same love affair with the aggressive cichlids. That sounds like my problems with overstocking were mild. I still have trouble awaiting me with one JD and one female convict, they are alright for now...but, the convict is getting more and more aggressive. Granted its a 10g. but they are the only members of that tank. My Jack is actually the tamest of mine. but he's 2 1/2" still.

You have a handful going on there. How long have you had the convicts, firemouths and sevs?
