Added New Discus To Tank At The Weekend

Nice Discus! Doesn't look sick to me, but still keep an eye open for stringy poo, other then this give him time and he will come around.
it is a beauty... since being in the tank on its own it seems very happy and content but still not eating as it should  i put loads of bloodworm in and they all go but there are 6 greedy apple snails in with it! i have seen it eat but very slow and not in quantity. all my others go mad for food and will eat from my hands

do you think i should leave it for a week and see if it picks up on the feeding?

If he's eating but really finicky I would probably worm him to be on the safe side. 500mg of Metronidazole per 10 gallons, with a 50% w/c (and then 250mg per 10gals Metro re-added) daily, for 5 days should clear him up fast.

Give it a try but that medication doesn't work for Nematodes (the most common parasite to infect Discus.) Your Discus definitely doesn't have tapeworms.

the wormer plus has made no difference. the discus still isnt eating..... ill try the sera med in a day or 2. fingers crossed

how long can it survive without eating?

i think it must be eating very small amounts as ive had the fish since the begining of may

Hi,

Sorry I didn't respond earlier my computer charger died, had to replace it.

I didn't think the wormer plus would do anything tbh :/ , the Sera med should hopefully help (fingers crossed.) Normally a healthy Discus can last up to a month or more, but by that time in most cases the worms have taken hold and it's really hard to turn them around :( Normally once they stop eating for long period and lose their strength it's too late :( Don't give up hope though, if you can get him even a little interested in food, soak the food in the med directly with some garlic guard or water, once he gets the med orally he will be good in no time.

What does the medication have in it? If it's pure Metronidazole, then dose 500mg per 10gals.

Hi Connor,

the discus still isnt eating or if he is its very little and not while im in the room  ive looked at the packaging for the sera med and all i can see is emamectin benzoate 320mg.... there is no ingredients list! it apparently helps with camallanus worms, roundworms, copepods and pinworms.
it states to add 1ml per 40L of water and to do a water change of at least 80% after 2 days. i followed it exactly and its had no effect on the discus. im still syphoning the uneaten food from the tank
ive ran out of ideas now.... i have an anti internal bacteria med, do you think its worth a try? im worried now that it wont last much longer as ive not seen it eat properly since i got him about 4 weeks ago! ive tried bloodworms, brineshrimp with garlic, prima, flake, beefheart all with no luck.

Only other med I would go for is pure Metronidazole. This is the only medications I have ever needed to use while treating any of my Discus. Might be a good idea to call up your supplier and let him know that he sold you an ill fish :/ He might have some insight for you/replacements.

Take care,

Connor

ive ben ringing around a few vets and to get hold of metronidazole i need to have a house visit from the vet costing £45 and then pay for the medication too  i can take the fish to them but i fear stressing it out any more, if i do this then the cost is about half!

the discus still isnt eating and seems very limp and has a serious lack of energy. i feel it may be too late to help it so the vet seems very expensive to try and save a very bad looking discus.... its pretty much just floating about sometimes sideways

I'm sorry to hear that :( I understand about the vet, that's pretty expensive. I would definitley talk to your supplier and tell him the situation (if you haven't already.)

been following this thread with interest , 1stly sorry to hear about your problems , hope the fish pulls through , also i agree with connor i think its gotta be worth taking things up with your supplier, who may well offer to rectify the situation , after all it is in their interests to maintain a certain level of reputation .
