Right i have a friend that told me that active carbon will remove plant food as well. is this true? I know it removes toxic chemicals but i have plants and i use plant food, my plants aren't doing very well so could that have any effect on it.

Don't use activated carbon. :D Though you can use root tabs which helps any that feed from roots, or you can add supplements directly into the water for those that feed that way if you still need activated carbon for whatever reason.

I don't use carbon unless I need to remove something from the water(i.e after treating with medication)

AC can remove trace nutrients that your plants could use.

Whether it'll remove significant amounts of those nutrients is up for debate. To the best of my knowledge, there is no conclusive proof that it does or doesn't.
