Acquiring Wood From Wild

Hey all, I live near the Indiana Dunes National State Park (coast of Lake Michigan - Fresh Water). I was just curious, if i went and collected some nice pieces of wood / rock, and then cleaned / soaked them thoroughly, Generally speaking (no mold, etc.) would they be suitable for my tank? I'm sure i could find some real nice pieces there. Thanks! = )

they would have to be boiled to remove any contaminants/hitchhikers. however as it is a national park you would probably have to get permission from the park ranger/people who run it as they may not want it to be taken from certain areas.
