Hi,

My aceis have been spawning today the female has a mouth full of eggs. They're absolutely beautiful fish and I think it might be cool to keep the fry and grow them for sale. I am wondering how many fry would typically survive if the female is put in a tank on her own and then perhaps striped at an appropriate time?

Do LFS tend to take fish for resale?

L

Some lfs' give you a bit of cash for them but it really isn't a lot.
Others just take fish for free.

I would try and sell them directly to people instead.

Put her in a seperate tank, but no need to strip her, just remove her from the tank when the fry get large enough where they are venturing away from mommy.

Every LFS is different in regards to taking a customer's fry. Most will not take fry under an inch long because cichlids genrally do not sell well unless at that minimum size. Most LFS will do nothing more than give you some credit for some other fish -- not cash. acei are pretty common, so you may not even get much credit.

An all acei tank is VERY beautiful. Consider starting with a small group of acei and letting them populate a 75g tank.

Hi,

I'd love to have a tank full of acei, but size does not allow it I'm afriad. I can set-up a 2ft x 1ft x 18 inch tall tank for mum + fry, and then return her to the 75g when they are big enough. But my 75g is full of fish now -- 24 relatively juvenile (about 2") cichlids.

Somebody said to not do anything with the fry if I didn't want to have to deal with them and they'd be eaten by other fish. This was my original plan, but the acei are just so georgous that I might pull them out and sell them, not to make profit, but just because it's interesting, and I haven't seen many of them in the local fish shops.

How many fry would there be about? Hopefully we're not talking hundreds.

I actually recorded them "at it" and put the video on youtube. I felt like a bit of a "voyer" filming them in the act, but it's fascinating footage! =)
