i accidently fed two out of date peas to my tank last week and one of my golden rams appears to be showing sign of distress.
only one of my golden rams seems to be suffering since this incident most of my chocolate gouramis sucker fish and other golden rams ate the two peas i put in but are not showing any negative signs.

symptoms are:

inactivity, not eating, rapid breathing/gill movement, loss of colour, small dull red marks appearing around mouth, mouth is constantly open.

tank water is very good quality (ammonia and nitrites 0 nitrates are v low) ph is carefully monitered with ro water and kept at about 7.

does anyone have any idea of any kind of treatments i can give him, maybe some food is stuck in his mouth since he cant close it (i wouldnt know where to start getting it out)

this is one of my first and favourite fish and im desperate to help him. so any advice would be greatly appreciated

just because there out of the date
on the pack doesn't mean they have gone
of if they were in the freezer
there probably still OK i use stuff
out of the freezer that is a year out of date
and eat my self with no ill affect

Hmmm... well it's either going to be something stuck in it's mouth or a parasitic infestation of the gills.

When you gave them the peas, did you put them in whole or did you squash them up into little bits first?

As Biffster says, it's unlikely an out of date frozen pea would cause an illness unless they were visibly mouldy but then you wouldn't have put mouldy peas in your tank...

they had been defrosted ealier that week and had gone mouldy in the fridge

i squashed the pea up (is that wrong?) i didnt think theyd be able to eat it otherwise

Hi Wooch

Sorry to hear the fish didn't survive...

Oh dear - well if the peas were mouldy I don't understand why you fed them, unless you didn't notice the mould at the time? Didn't they look "off" or smell strange when you picked a few out and crushed them?

Anyway, yes, you do squash/chop peas into tiny bits before feeding, that's right.

Aww, let's hope none of your other fish become sick from the dodgy peas (if that was the actual cause of your fish death). I guess you won't be making that mistake again in a hurry!

Regards -Athena
