I did a water change on my tank last night and did a major gravel vac, moving all the decor and cleaning underneath. Just as I was putting in the last bucket of water I caught the brace bar and it broke (juwel rio 300)There was a huge bang and the whole tank shook. I grabbed the back of the tank and held it together while hubby got the spare brace bar and fitted it (lucky I had one!!) I am so lucky the whole tank didnt break. But the tank was full of tiny air bubbles?. I turned up the air pump to try and help disperse the bubbles, but after about an hour some of the fish were lying on the bottom of the tank (angels, gourami). I switched off the lights in the hope they were just stressed. They seem ok this morning but I have found 1 ram dead :-(, he had a wound on his head, I dont know if he swam into something when the bar broke. the ammonia reading is up a little so I am doing another water change now. I think it could have been realeased from the gravel?.

Apart from monitoring my water stats, and changing the water as necessary is there anything else I could do?

Just keep an eye on all the residents and tank for any further stress/damage? Sorry for your ram hon, it may have been a bit of a shock with the brace going. You seem to be doing all the right things (from a sensible point of view!) Hope someone who has had one go or furhter suggestions can help. x

wow that is what i call a bad start to the weekend.....im sure they just had a shock.. like amy says your doing all you can do...and fantastically :) so keep doing it :)

if the whole tank shudderd then it sounds daft but it ma have sent a bit of a shockwave through the water a bit so shocked them like banging on th4e glass real hard its bad for them

(my rio 400 only has one brace bar as i broke one ) (been like that for a year gonna have to get one)

Thanks everyone, just about to start topping the tank back up again now VERY CAREFULLY lol the poor things the bang must have scared them so much. I know banging on the glass can kill fish, but the whole tank!!! wow I think I am real lucky to have just lost one. Keeping my fingers crossed he is the only one!

Update; water stats are fine today, all the rest of the fish apear ok but the angels are still hanging round the bottom of the tank. However the water is very "bitty", cleaned out the filter wool hoping this will clear the bits.
