I've bought another 240l tank (a present for my ma !) to replace her little one that we've had fry in for 3 months. I will complete a fishless cycle (am thinking of using NT labs start-ok, anyone used this ?)

However, I do have a really dopey question....been bugging me for ages and I've finally plucked up enough courage to embarass myself. When you buy plants, they have the silver band around them, and the sponge. Should you remove this before planting, or keep in this binding ? Also, can you plant straight into gravel, or should you have something underneath the gravel ?

Advice appreciated, without the laughter

thats a good question i bought 1 live plant for my tank and it has what looks to be lead around the bottom although it can be or it would have killed all my fish by now

the stuff around the plant, is rock wool its a synthetic planting medium and will rot in the aquarium so remove, it, the ring is a weight, if your planting into the gravel it should hold but just incase it doesnt put the weight around the plant minus the rock wool

Hi Scoobyk :)

You never have to worry about people here laughing about a question you've asked. We all wonder how to do different things from time to time. :D

I'm going to move your thread over to the Planted Tank section. If there's anything else to add to this, someone posting in there will surely help you.
