I'm planning on setting up a "downriver amazon" habitat tank. I was hoping to include some Rams... now, I've done some research, but im a bit confused because im getting different answers from different sites :S hate that.

so anyway... here were the questions, including some of the answers i got.

i was wondering if in a 30 gallon tank, 2 pairs of rams would be suitable. I've gotten a no, that they should have ten gallons to themselves without any other rams (but tetras or something would be fine), and ive gotten yes, but youll need extra hiding spaces so they feel safe or whatnot.

now also : i wanted to have, if i could, 2 pairs or something, 2 different kinds of ram. I was hoping to have some German blue rams, but i was torn because i thought hte golden rams were lovely as well, so i hoped for both perhaps, with a rock area on both sides of the tank (so they can be away and hidden if htey feel threatened?) do i have a good way of thinking here, or is this just bad, and i should just choose one pair and give up with the other? haha

EDIT: just thought of this- if i cant get 2 pairs, would i be best off getting 2 females for one male (i read also that they like being like that, and also that it encourages breeding, which may be a factor later on since I do greatly enjoy breeding different fish) okay, thats it :D

I know how you feel to be dran between two different fish.I wouldnt get 2 pairs in my opinion. You can get two female for awhile till one of them pairs up with the male. You should return the other fish at this point. So good luck with your tank hope to see pix of it.

They are monogamous, so definatly would be a bad idea. Once I temporarily had to rest another female in my tank, my original female attacked the bag for about 30 minutes  until I could put her elsewhere. Think it would be the same with two types, but it could work with lots of cover, but may disrupt breeding.

A pair will breed easily if you give live foods. Also the males are pretty dedicated, my own male will actually take control of egg gaurding and cleaning, often chasing my female off.

If you didnt care so much about the breeding you could get one gold and blue ram M/F pair(same species diff colours), If you wanted one of each. I have done this fine in the past fine (but as it was a community tank I didnt get any eggs to hatching point :/ oh well :) )

I'm not sure this is correct. I have two Blue rams and two Golden rams. I'm no expert but watching them, I'd say one male Blue has definately paired up with the female Golden. They seem to be 'hangin out' together in a cave and quickly chasing any other fish away that comes near.
