Abi's New, Restarted Cycle Log.

It was processing in 14 hours, at this rate it's going to be weeks! I knew I'd have to be patient but this is stretching it severely! I would like to get some neons and x-ray fish as well as some corydoras catfish, max 15 fish.

I've cleaned the inside of the tank glass to remove the thick layer of algae, it was 0ppm at 9, added ammonia...fingers crossed for 9pm tonight!

So - just tested the water, got a dark green result, a definite 4ppm or more. Seriously - what is going on?! I'm not adding more than 2.5ml at a time!!!

Just tested again, it's reading 2ppm. Somebody PLEASE tell me what is going on? I've run out of ammonia testing liquids, got another kit in the post.

Yes, I had to get another kit during mine too. It never goes down steadily, it jumps around and you have to look at the "trend" over many days or a week or two. We never talked about your filter.. what type is it and what media have you got in there? Perhaps the members can make something out of that.

UM, Post number twelves??? I mentioned stats about the filter. The inside of it is like foam, or a flexi honey comb structure.

Yes, that didn't mean anything to me, so just now I searched and eventually found some refs to the tank kit. Its still not anything I've ever heard of or seen but of course that's not saying much as I'm in the US. Perhaps there are UK members who might have had one of the filters from an Aldi kit and could comment, I don't know. I know that Fluval make a good internal but I don't know how that would compare with the Aldi filter. Its important that a filter not allow large amounts of water to "leak" by the media or media containers. Otherwise it can be difficult to build up large bacterial colonies, particularly on a timely basis. I don't know if that's your problem but its possible. Unfortunately, not ever having had my hands on one, I'm not really the one to comment. As OM commented earlier though, you are far from having no colonies.. you've got colonies in there but the overall capacity seems to be having difficulty ramping up to size.
