Ok so iv ordered my new tank today and I am thinking of all of the things I'll need. Polystyrene came to mind for the base of the tank to be sandwiched between the tank and cabinet then it struck me!! I have not done this on my current 190L aqua one tank!! What should I do? It's been running for something like 8 months without it now I'm struck with panic!

In the tank there are large rocks and ornaments. The rocks have grooves in being ocean rock where my cats hang out so when I move them I usually keep them submerged for that reason. Now is it worth doing the polystyrene now for this tank while I'm on with the new one when it come? If so what's the best form of action? Obviously remove everything bar the substrate and drain the tank as far as I can go. Now how many litres should I keep to go back in? I usually only change 60L at a time so that would mean having to keep 13 buckets with the water in or try and find a 50L bin fish wise will it be a case of netting them and placing within the buckets with each other? I could get 3 people here two to lift and one to place polystyrene under.

How urgent is this?? If desperately required I was thinking on Wednesday for doing it.

Cheers guys

On a lot of tanks it actually voids the warranty because it spreads the weight unevenly and the tank base is designed to do just that, unless it is a rimless base with just glass. On my juwel rio it voids the warranty and I think I saw something simliar on my aquaone warranty aswell.

The Aqua One has a "floating base" so does not need Polystyrene.

Its an evo 100 LINK TO TANK do you reckon it will be ok or am I running the risk of it cracking or something alike? And does that tank have a floating bottom? The tank is sturdy enough but I notice when you fill it and the water is getting near to the lip at the top it's not 100% even but does look even on the cabinet its sitting on.

Am I running the risk of major damage eventually if I don't sort this or will I be fine? I'll defo do it on the aquience iv just ordered. What is the usual thickness you would use?

Most of the manufactured tanks are floating tanks as said that dont need polystyrene and most of the ones from the major brands dont need it - I would be surprised if the companies did not supply it if needed or a base mat or the like.

Iv been reading the instructions for the tank online and it says nothing about using polystyrene but I checked out the new aquarium I bought and that says you must use the protective matt included otherwise it will void the warranty. So I'm starting to wonder if the current tank needs it otherwise it should have been supplied?

Mad panic I would cry being on the top floor flat! Had a leak with my washer which went to downstairs so I have to pay to have that fixed! Concrete floors 2 but water will always find away! I wonder if it's on the house insurance or if it has to be added to it!

The worst thing to do is panic to be honest it wont just explode tonight - I would maybe ring a local LFS that stocks those tanks and find out if you need them and then see if they can help by selling you something empty out your tank, fish in a bucket put the polystyrene or the matting that you can get and reassemble. Its a total pain in the neck but worth it in the long run.

Most contents insurance covers fish tanks as its a cosmetic object.

Iv sent seapets an email asking them what they think so hopefully they will email me back. Have just ordered the other tank from them so I'll be most disappointed if they don't! If worst comes to the worst I can always do it on Tuesday try and get someone to help me lift it haha. Will be my mother more than likely if shes feeling strong unless I can draft a mat into doing it haha. I'm really hoping I don't and it will be ok. Just with the washer leaking I'm paranoid and with it clicking in my mind at work I'm like oh dear!

Well i called my local Dobbies who stock the tanks they said its not necessary on this tank or the majority of aqua ones and others he named! Thank God! If the new tank needs it i think it will come with it i hope! Although i need to get substrate etc before i can do anything to it :-l

Ah good to hear! Most of the shop bought tanks dont need them because of the floating bases which is a pretty good idea really :) Its only custom made tanks that need them these days and most suppliers give you the polystyrene.
