I have a fry tank and that is exactly what I do. When ever the female is showing signs she is going to give birth most likely that day, I put her in the fry tank. And I still have a tank full of fry. Some of gotten big enough to put into my main tank. So I'd say it's ago, but wait til just before she's going to give birth. Even if she is already giving birth don't worry, the move won't stress her. She's already stressed from labor. Just move her gently. I've never had a problem doing this.
