Hi,
I have recently managed to get a Eheim pro filter off ebay for £25. Im going to run this alongside my Fluval 3+ until it is fully established. Then, what im hoping to do is remove the 3+ and keep it as a spare, however would I be able to shove the media from the 3+ into one of the Eheim baskets (Ive not received the filter yet) so that it stays established?

Regards
Mike

You can cut it to make it fit.

You can cut it to make it fit.

I dont want to cut it, I want to keep it whole so that if the Eheim fails/leaks or whatever I can just remove the original 3+ media and put the 3+ back in.

You can cut it if you want, and then just put it back in to the other one if it fails.

Other than that, just run the new one alongside the old one for 1 month.

In one month you will have enough bacteria colonized in your new filter to run on its own.

Do you think I will be able to add it in one piece though. Im not during to mature the new filter quicker.

Currently I have a Fluval 3+ and have bought a Eheim Pro my plan is....

1. Run new filter alongside the Fluval to mature it
2. Once the new one is mature (1-2months I guess) I want to remove the Fluval from the tank but keep it as a spare. So I was hoping I could put the media from the Fluval into the Eheim so that if the Eheim failed I could remove the original Fluval media (in one piece) from the Eheim and put it back into the Fluval so that I know it would be a perfect fit.

Does that make sense?

I suppose what im asking is do you think the Fluval media would fit in the Eheim without cutting it?

Thanks
Mike

I never owned either of those filters, so I cannot say if it will fit perfect or not.

Once you get the new filter, I would try it and see. :good:

Ok but will this be an ok way of keeping the media mature?

If the filer media is in the new filter, that will be hooked up and running on the tans, yes, the filter media will have a constant ammonia source, and will stay alive/mature.

The eheim pro trays are large and relatively square. Usually most of their volume would be filled by ceramic rings or ceramic gravel. There's a good chance the entire Fluval 3+ pad or whatever it is might fit in there, perhaps diagonally. Hope this keeps you thinking positively, lol.
