I purchased a piece of driftwood that is attached to a slab of slate(?) rock. Originally, I'd placed it in my 2-gallon tank with a Betta fish but found it was clouding the water. A water test showed high levels of ammonia and nitrites, so I took it out. I've tried soaking it in dechlorinated water and drying it in the sun, but it continues to give off toxins. I don't want to get rid of it, as I think it would be great for the pleco who resides in my 5-gallon tank, but how do I sterilize it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i've been soaking mine in hot/boiling water for a week now, water is gradually getting clearer :good:

you have a pleco in a 5 gal tank?

Yes, I just "inherited" (for lack of a better word) a 5-gallon tank that houses a pleco and some sort of tetra(?)

I've been reading up on plecos and I'm aware they can become quite large! I suppose I will have to start upgrading as she gets bigger, or give her to someone with a larger tank.

i'd really do the latter - and asap too before its growth is stunted :good:

It's a common pleco, right?
