Well.. I cam home form college today.. and.. all my SAEs were dead. except one.. but I am sure he will be dead soon. :( I don't have any clue as to why. I tested my water (twice) and one nitrite reading came back .1 or so PPm (slightly different tint of blue then the card's 0 ppm color) and the other was exactly 0. I don;t see how that killed them when i added them to the tank they survived their little 0.25 ppm nitrite spike. I just don't get it..

A similar thing happened to me a while back. Maybe a bacterial infection while you were gone? I found out that my place was bug sprayed while I was away.

Dunno... sorry. :(

mm.. they are kind of blotted.. I squeezed them a bit and their bellies burst... -sigh-

it seems my one last living SAE will contiune to live.. any idea how long it will take till he gets mean?

I had an SAE for years and he never got "mean"......he was my beloved first "tropical" fish. Sorry to hear of your losses.

he he is not aggreessive toward others? true sae or false? I sitll wanan get him a shcool again.. though.. he will be the biggest now.. the other biggest died.. he is the smallest of the shoal that died.

I would wait a couple of weeks (and a couple of partial water changes) before adding more, if you do not know what happened. :/ Also try feeding the fish that you have some veggies.

I am thinking my fish died of gill flukes.. this little description fits them.. I feels so bad for not notiscing it before reading it.

There are many species of flukes, which are flatworms about 1 mm long, and several symptoms that are visible. They infest gills and skin much like ich, but the difference can be seen with a hand lens. You should be able to see movement and possibly eye spots, which is not found in ich. Gill flukes will eventually destroy the gills thus killing the fish. Symptoms of a heavy infestations are pale fish with drooping fins, rapid respiration, glancing off aquarium decor, and /or hollow bellies.

sorry bout your fish :/ ive had gill flukes kill one of my fish- they are hard to get rid of and i hate them! have you see the flukes on the dead fish? the surviving fish may have them.

btw what fish is a SAE?

i thought an sae was a stamped addressed envelope and not a fish lol well you learn something new every day lmao had this vision of soggy envelopes in a tank like waterd down paper mashe wonder how many stamped addressed envelopes you could fit ina tank with out overcrowding lmao

SAE's generally don't get mean. They're good, even tempered fish that continue to do their job even as they grow. It's the CHINESE algae eaters that get really agressive and try to suck slime and scales off other fish when they get big.

rubberdoofa i bet you were wondering how would nitrite kill the stamps lol. also cardboardboxprocessor how big is your tank(s)
