Okay just filled my 100 litre tank with cold water aiming to keep some cold water fish. Only trouble is I think it's too cold!

In the last four hours the temperature in the water has been between 9-11 degrees Celsius. Are there any fish that can thrive in that kind of temperature?

If not then I can always buy a heater but then I may as well go tropical.

Secondly, I've got a APS 800IF filter, which is pretty noisy! It's also pretty long and on the box it says it has to be totally submerged but mine has about 10% above the water line, is that a major problem? I could put some more water in but not too much.

Thanks for any advice.

That's rather cold... how warm is your house?  The water temp should match the air temp fairly closely, it will just take some time to warm up to that level if you used cold tap water.

If you have well water, that water is usually 40-50 degress F, and tap water comes from under ground, very similar temps as well.

If the temps get up to 14+ degrees, White Cloud Mountain minnows would be a nice choice.

If you buy a heater you could go subtropical, which most coldwater fish thrive at.

Which fish are you thinking of having? Most coldwater fish are happiest around temperatures of 20*C.

A paradise fish and some WCMM (like EA suggested) would look quite nice.

Well you were right, the tank has gone up a few degrees and is now at a steady 15 degrees.

I did visit the LFS today and they had some WCM and a lot of different types of Oranda but not much else in the cold water variety.

Would the Oranda's be ok with the WCM or would they eat them, there was quite a difference in size between the two types of fish!

Unfortunately, your tank is not big enough for the orandas :/

Goldfish with WCMM are not advisable.

Well that's what I thought although the ones in the LFS were only about 2-3 inches long.

They may be that size now, but believe me they will grow and if they're put in your tank then they will unfortunately most likely become stunted :/

Okay fair enough.

Unsure what to go for with the WCM, was thinking of getting say 8 of them as I know they like to school but they did look pretty small and don't want to get tank mates that will gobble them up!

Rosy red minnows are another option.   These are generally in the 'feeder' section.

the filter is fine if its above the water but i recomed for the water that you buy a heater but that doesn't necessarily mean you can only keep tropical fish because the heaters have a tempeature you can adjust them too and thats what the tempeture will be in the tank.i have a marina heater.
