After almost 40 years of aquarium keeping, I still do not feel myself qualified to move into the field of shrimps and the like. The most exotic that I've dared, was keeping Fire newts, which I accidently cooked out when the heater got stuck. Gave me a bit of a complex in braving the rest. Long since I've heard of anyone keeping Newts..... Are they still part of aquarium culture??

i have seem them in pet shops with fish so i would say yes, also in some of the reptile forums ive been on people use them as part of their biotopes as a creature that moves from the water with fish to land with.... frogs and other things.

If you can keep ammonia and nitrite levels at 0 then there are shrimp that you can keep. The easier varieties (like the ones in those pics) really aren't that difficult to keep, so long as there is nothing sharing their tanks to eat them. They just can't be doing with ammonia or nitrites (or copper). Those who I know of who have failed in keeping those species have either somehow gotten copper in their system, had fish that ate them, have added them too soon, have added fish AFTER adding shrimp or have tried to keep them in an aquarium that isn't planted enough.

Cherry shrimp and amano shrimp are really easy to keep, and cherry shrimp if you can keep them you can breed them.

Their needs are similar to thos of Ottos really, even down to how to acclimatise them when you first get them.

They are (in any case) not readily available in S.A. (have'nt seen any in any pet store yet)
