USA,
Why are discuss so much money? They breed in the aquarium, they are not wild caught. Yeah I know that they are colorfull, but so are guppies. It seems rediculous to make their price so high. I just dont get it.

When you buy one you will find out why they cost so much. They are excellent fish although they can be very sensitive and fragile. great fish tp keep and very interesting. The price isn't really too bad if you think about it. I got my two for £20.00 each.

Everyone has a different sense of too much but I agree, they are really expensive. I guess if I was really good with water parameters and knew they would be good then perhaps I would get them. Of course they are 80 US dollars around here. :p

$35 for mini ones and $50-100 for bigger ones.

just because they are "interesting" shouldnt be the reason they cost so much. neither should them being fragile. there are many fragile fish that dont cost that much.

They are $60 here, but my lfs said they would let me have 2 for $100 if I wanted to buy 2 of them :/ I know that my lfs buys juvies and then invests a good deal of time and money raising them and making sure that they're healthy and eating well before they will sell them.

Discus require lots of water changes, good nutritional diet, and time. Thats why they are so expensive but you will get over the price when you get them. I kno I have.

Ya, it would take excellent care to raise beautiful fry to selling size. Just think of the service costs for the breeders. Perfect water params, tons of water changes, large enough grow out and spawning tanks...

I'd say they are worth the cash.

I saw my first shoal of discus nearly a year ago and new I had to have them! They are beautiful fish and I have spent a lot of time and effort reading and learning about them, they can you so much attention and they are gorgeous, yes guppies are pretty (I have them too) but they are not the same!

I don't understand why some odd balls are so attractive for the price some people pay for them, to me a lot of them are down right ugly! Also I'd rather have a huge tank with smaller fish than a large tank for one or two odd balls.

It's about opinions and what you want out of your tank, if you don't know why they cost so much then you will probably never own one and that's fine, it's those of us who choose to live with them that get the benefit! :D
