I was given a 1 gal tank with an under gravel setup. I would like to get it going but I don't know enough about using this filtering method. How to cycle? I understand the beneficial bacteria live in the gravel so do you vac? What could I keep in 1gal? Betta? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I think a 1 gallon is small even for a betta. A betta could probably live in 1 gallon, but not very happily.

Yes, an underground filter works by means of the helpful bacteria that live in the gravel. The thing i hate about underground filters is that you have to break them down periodically because muck will eventually build up underneith it. I would definitely filter the gravel (if you can find a gravel vac small enough).

put a layer of mulm ontop of the filter grate and then a layer of round gravel...it would be fine for some fancy shrimps...too small for a betta...and with shrimps you dont need a heater, as for gravel vacing just lightly go over the surface...you may not even need to with shrimp...i didnt need to in my shrimp tank

Maybe a shrimp or some snails, not much, maybe just a tank that has no fish in it, but has plants in it.

Opps, I forgot, I am not supposed to be giving advice when I have no expirence.

Thanks for the advice folks. I really wasn't sure if it was worth even setting it up. I don't really understand why people buy these things and what the lfs suggests to put in it. The next time I go there, I'm gonna ask. The answer should be interesting  Probably tell me I could keep an oscar in it! I may just use it for plants Betta Boy. Not sure who gave you the complex  but I'll accept advice from everybody.

Thanks again.

a small oscar will be fine as it'll grow to the size of its tank

but honestly, i wouldn't put anything other then shrimps or snails
you could use it to harvest daphnia. look for cultures online!

I did think about using as a fry tank if my guppies have kids. The plant idea may be the ticket for now. I'll have to see how my guppies are looking. Thanks.
