Hi everybody,

Remember this charming girl?

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showto...986&hl=Lucy

Unfortunately, she just wasn't the same cat after the 4th of July. The fireworks really did a number on her. The other kittens forgot within a day, but Lucy was severely traumatized. She was very unhappy in my home, and I felt terrible for her, and I was frustrated that I couldn't really help her despite my efforts. I was still going to keep her, nobody's perfect, but she was not the loving pet I used to know. I had resigned myself to feeding and caring for an aloof and unaffectionate animal. She would even bite me when I fed her, in addition to breaking things, skulking in a corner, and lashing out at my dogs and other human family members. I was no longer her mama, a source of grief for me, as we had been through a lot (severe flea infestation, a bout of clamydia, etc).

Well, a co-worker of my sister's came to visit the other day, and Lucy completely changes. She came out of her corner and went and sat next to my sister's friend, where she proceeded to purr and play with the co-worker. She hadn't purred for over a month! She turned into the lovable cat she was before the 4th of July. As it turns out, my sister's friend recently lost her cat, and I guess Lucy sensed the loss, never leaving her side the entire time she visited. They both seemed so happy that we asked the lady if she would like to keep Lucy. She would only need to be spayed, and she had all of her shots. The lady was very touched and agreed, so she picked up Lucy Yesterday. Funny, Lucy, who hates going into the carrier, walked into the carrier on her own that day. She knew. I am very happy that Lucy found the home she deserved. Sometimes, you have to adjust to the fact that despite all your love, attention, and caring, your home may not be the best home for a pet. Our house has changed too. The tension that permeated after July 4th is gone, and all the pets are much more relaxed, but especially my 7-year-old cat and the dogs. One unhappy pet seemed to have made everybody unhappy. She needed the peace and quiet that my sister's co-worker could provide. Our home, with birds, fish, dogs, and other cats, is a loud, loud, home! We miss Lucy, I cried a lot that day, but we are very, very happy that she formed a special bond with her new owner. :) Just thought I'd share, as I haven't updated on the progress of the kittens in a long time. Now you know why.

congratulations to you and lucy, for a happier way forward. i'm glad she found a way to be happy, and that your household can be harmonious again. i bet it was hard for you to see her go, but like you said, everyone's better off now.

it must be sad to lose an animal that you have given everything you could to but you must feel great that she has come out of herself and given someone else something they need as well as finding what she herself needs.
you're guarenteed to miss her but you know she has gone somewhere loving where she will be happy

xXx

Thank you for being selfless and picking up on Lucy's clues. I'm sure she's much happier now. And you should be very proud of what you did. It was a very loving thing.

Wow, it's all i can say.. i felt like crying after reading that :) Especially thinking how my best friends family reacted when they had to give away 3 cats they had cared for, for like ages i thought i was gonna drown in there tears i even felt sad myself. It's the best thing you done. Well done :)

its true cat will choose their owners, my mum moved into a house and about 2 weeks later a white cat was found sat on the chair in the sitting room and he stayed there for 14 years until he passed away last year, a mean and grumpy sod turned into a loving and loyal friend for my mum and stepfather, apparently his previous owners wouldnt let him in the house and all he wanted was a warm loving home that treated him with respect.

lucy will be fine and good on you for knowing the signs, your a good owner, most people just hang onto miserable animals b/c they see them as their property but sad can become cheerful and some changes are needed for improvement....................blasted fireworks, my pup heard some for the first time tonight and was toally freaked out by it all, she only just settled after about 2 hours

I really want to thank everybody for their support and encouragement. It was a difficult decision to make and your comments made me feel much better about what I did. She is adjusting very well and continues to be affectionate to her new owner without sacrificing some of her spirit. The difference here at home is like night and day.

Again, thanks.

PS: I'll see if I've got the time to update my other kitten thread in the next week.

You made the right decision. I had cat once that changed like that too. He would hide all the time and cause lots of problems. We gave him to a lady who had one just like him and he completely changed back to the way he was a kitten. Like you said, every animal is unique in their own way.

Whats going on with the kitten in your signature? Thats a nice looking cat :good:

That kitten is Cleo. She is part of a litter of five that I raised. Part of that other thread. A very sweet little cat, though a bit of a trouble maker. Absolutely loves dogs.
