Hi there,

My Dad’s cousin has asked me to set his tank up for him he is converting his 4th bedroom into a tank room and asked me to run it. It will have 3 display tanks that will be seen in 3 different rooms. He is a wealthy man and told me that the budget is virtually unlimited  all of the display tanks will be maintained from the tank room and but the display side will be facing different rooms. I will also have the pleasure of maintaining these tanks. Sadly my dream tank just wont be in my house. But what a fun and awesome challenge.

Tank 1 main tank visible from the kitchen, dining and lounge.
Size: 12ft long x 3ft wide x 2 1/2ft tall (3.65m x .91m x .76m)
Fish: 10-12 adult discus most likely blue turquoise(will grow these in bare bottom tanks in fish room), 50-60 Rummy-nose tetra or tetra of some kind, Cordyus trilineatus or corys, a species of small pleco
Plants: I was thinking swords large and small, Anubias, Java fern…….and?????
Hardscape: Light colored rocks, sand on top of substrate, and redgum roots

Tank 2 in the entrance area
Size: 6ft long x 2 1/2ft wide x 2 1/2ft deep this will be for lace gouramis and a few other species that I will research on.

Tank 3 in his entertaining area (basically a lounge and outdoor eating/bbq area.
Undercided yet!

The reason for this post is to get some ideas and discuss some options, I am not the most experienced and plan to learn as I go over the next 12-18 months with this project that wont start for about six months. My dad and I are still fitting out the fishroom, tiling etc.
After ideas on
Substrate, Plants, Filtration, Lighting etc……
I am so excited!

Regards Darren

Woah! I would love to see piccies of that when its finished! Its gonna be better that the blue planet aquarium!!!

Why not visit some aquariums for inspiration? - you could get your dads cousin to pay for you - business expenses.......

Amazing, what an opportunity! Are you going to have all fresh water then?

Thanks most the aquariums here are all salties these will all be fresh water...... but I am pretty excited so is Max will the prelim plans I informed him of.

What are you like with planted aquariums?

If experienced you could have a go at some nature aquarium designs. A grassy landscape with a massive shoal of tetra would be really impressive, although reserved.

Are the tanks to be viewed from the fish room as well. If so dutch may not be as good as that seems to rely on the banking effect of the plants and so would only really work from one side.

These guys have some pretty interesting ideas: http://www.cau-aqua.net/index.php?option=c...d=1&lang=en

If you live near wrexham there's meant to be an impressive shop: the green machine that specialises in planted aquaria. Apparently there is a type of glass- optiwhite- that is much clearer than standard glass- although pricier- check out their website.

Just started getting interested in planted aquaria and there seems to be alot of scope for designs out there.

Experienced-ish I was going to paint the back and sides black for effect but unsure yet, this is still in the planning but the guy I am doing them for loves nature so was leaning towards bio-type-ish tanks.

Thanks for the links the more the better for inspiration i think in Australia we call that super clear glass diamond glass I think???

Regards Darren

yeah wrexam's a bit far to go for that.

Have you thought of using the large tank for some big fish like arowana- impressive and if money's no object, you could probably get some prime specimens?

Hi there

the discus, lace gouramis were a pre-requisite by Max (my dad's cousin) and natural bio-type-ish tanks they must be.....

He also wants a lunar cycle, sunrise and sunset so he has some ideas that are sorta fixed the rest is for me to do and decide :)

Definitely check out the opti white glass if you've got money to play with - it's quite impressive stuff

Wow! Would look great with a group of Red Turqoise Discus/ Rummy-Nose Shoal.

How about a Couple of Severum Cichlids and a Special Pleco> Blue Phantom/ King Tiger?

For Gouramis, have you seen 'Moonlight' Gouramis (White, and similar to Lace Gouramies)

Also, how about a 'Pangea-wood' background with Back-lighting??

Would be good to see development take place...

I will check out that glass i only need the front sheet to be that, also I have never heard of those gouramis will have a look.

:good:

Thanks the moonlight gouramis are very nice....do they occur in the wild?

I think they originate from likes of Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo... But usually crop up at Local stores..(in UK)

I dont know if I have ever seen them here captive but I have never realy sought gouramis out so they may very well been common however I have kept lace gouramis and loved them.
