Ok - How many cichlids could i get? From lake Malawi.

Also, anybody have a nice list for me?
I want 1 breeding pair, and colourful other ones.

This tank will also have Oceon rock in it. But no other fish - Only Cichlids.

Anyone? As im going down to the shop tommorow - might need to see if they stock them etc.

From what I've read to get my malawi mbuna tank started you tank is too small. Also mbuna do not form breeding pairs. The males have harems.... now that is lucky. I'm not sure about other malawi fish. Have you checked the shell dwellers from tanganiyika? I believe they are suitable for your tank.

every since i saw malawis in my lfs i wanted some, but tanks size hasnt allowed me, so i thought about getting the largest i could fit, an 80cm 33galon tank... and get tanganyikans, however research has shown that even for this tank size not many would be happy, so your tank would be limited to the small shellys, of tanganyika-- brevis and multifasciatus... you can keep a colony of the latter mentioned species... if i were you i would either get a bigger tank- like a 45 or 50 and keep tanganyikans-community(more choice in this tank size), or think about what other cichlids you can keep- ie, kribs, maybe some new worlds, the small shellys of tanganyika dont really have the wow factor for me, so if i wanted to keep african cichlids i wouldnt bother until i had a larger tank, its all about territories, you must get the longest tank you can and the deepest, height is irrelivant(to a certain degree), they have to have suitable territories to defend, and when they are ontop of each other then there is likely to be agression and stress, on your part, not just the fishes

good luck mate

I've nothing to add, just thought I'd say I agree with AdAndrews completely. :good:

Edit: Oops, I take that back, one thing to add http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/cookie_cutter_20g.php

Eh, this is the biggest tank i can fit in.
Its fairly long.
Should be ok for 5-6 small cichlids.
And if they got to big I would rehome

If you are thinking mbuna (the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Malawi) they would out grow your tank once they hit around 2", and if they are allowed to reach sexual maturity in there, you're looking at WWIII.

I highly suggest you find speciecs (whether they are cichlids or not) that will be able to stay in your tank for good. Not trying to sound harsh, just trying to save you a little heartache and frustration. :good:

i know this can be frustrating, we are really not trying to anoy you, its just the facts, you either have to accept that you cant get them in your tank or try and most likely fail....

if it were me in that tank i would have:

pair of breeding kribs
dither fish- ie barbs- odessa's are vv nice
and then a nice pleco, like the royal panque

what about yellow labs?

in the nicest way possible mate, have you tried searching on google?

yellow labs need around 120L MIN, and 300L to be absolutely dandy :)

sorry if i sounded rude.

Yup, yellow labs (labidochromis caeruleus) are one of the mbuna species from Lake Malawi, and should be kept in at least a 4-ft tank. Some have kept them in 3-ft tanks with some success, but the vast majority end up having to upgrade due to aggression issues. I'm afraid a 25gal (95 litre) would be entirely out of the question for them.

If you took a look at the link I added in my first post, there are suggestions for species that will work in your tank. As several have pointed out, apistogrammas would work well in there, and come in stunning colors. :good:
