I have a 95L (69cm L x 30cm W x 45cm D) tank that I'm thinking of getting up and running (has been used until recently as a vivarium but is now thoroughly cleaned and rinsed). I have other aquaria from which I can borrow media to speed up the cycle. It'll be running two internal fileters, an Aquaone 101F and an old Fluval filter which is slightly bigger with a more powerful head (No Idea of model)

But I'm sort of stumped on stocking ideas.
I'd like something bottom level, probably 4 or so leapord cories.

I'd also like a small shoal and a feature fish with plenty of colour. The tank is to be viewed from a couple of metres away so nothing too small.
I like the look of some of the tiger barbs (Rosy tigers in particular), but I know how nippy they can be, which would make life difficult for the feature fish. (Not interested in guppies, endlers or tetras due to other tanks)
I've looked at the dwarf gouramis and while some of the colours are great the two spindly bits put me off. (Cichlids don't float my boat)

Other than the above, I'm an open book and would welcome suggestions.

(Ok Having had another look, 7 five banded barbs with a pair of dwarf gourami's looks like the right set up for me, any advice or recommended changes)

Imo 95L is not big enough for a shoal of Tiger Barbs I just think they are too active. I know you said no tetras but Rummynose or Rathbun's Bloodfin would look nice in a setup like that. It would be quite difficult to keep Corydoras with Rams because of Temperature differences, the only Cory that could be a possibility is C .Sterbai. You could also get some Otocinclus. Then for a centerpiece, there aren't alot of things that AREN'T Cichlids of Gouramis. So I would go for one of those but if you don't like those a Betta would work. If I were you I would stock it like this.

8 - 10 Rummynose Tetras/Rathbun's Bloodfins
6 - 8 Corydoras Sterbai
3 - 4 Betta species [Imbellis, Pugnax, Splendens] 1 x M, 2 - 3 x F
4 - 5 Otocinclus

I had considered a Betta, but the local stockist regularly has very poor specimins and I wouldn't want to bring an unhealthy fish into the tank. I've never seen them stock an ottocindus.

I don't really think the rummynoses look all that good from a distance. Would 5 striped barbs fit better than tiger barbs? They're a little less active and a little smaller?

If you mean Puntius Petrazona when you say Striped Barb those would work but I would get more than 5. If you can't get a Betta I don't know of any other options, sorry

Sorry, I know pentazona as five striped, and I was saying to get 7 of them. I can see how it was unclear. Having looked, I think it will have to be a gourami, I'll just find some with short tendrils.

It's a shame about the betta, but I just couldn't, with good conscience, purchase one that was so inactive, so pale and grey, with such raggedy clumped fins, red gills and hollow bellies. All round it's a good fish store, and their betta facility is second to none but the fish themselves...eesh.

I don't think there are any gouramis without those things but you forget about them, and they can be very interesting since they are actually taste organs.
Look into Indian gourami they're quite hard to find but worth it.

If I get one or two gourami, would it be better to get two males, two females or one of each?

Sorry to bump but dues to some minor emergencys (A heater that broke so no heating  , a heater that broke so never turned off  , a split in my 7.5" sealing :hyper: and various) I haven't got this tank started yet and my LFS just got in a massive batch of cory's. They have (or are getting soon)

Acre, Adolfo, Bronze, Spotted, Skunk, Panda, Emerald(V. Expensive), concolour, elegant, blochi and something else...What do I do?

Seriously, is there any difference or much difference in size, behaviour, feeding etc. between all these cory's? Will they shoal together across types (are they just different colours or different species) What would be best?

There isn't all that much difference in size or care between any of those cories, but do look them up individually to check.

They are all different species and while thye might group together if you buy a mixture, it will only be out of 'necessity', and a group of one species would be much, much better.

My fav is the adolfoi, but they do tend to be quite expensive; I paid £50 for my six  Having fish that expensive is an additional worry; you do spend an awful lot more time stressing out, so do bear that in mind!
