70ltr Planted Aquaria

Looking good BigC, good to see you haven't suffered any algae yet - a common problem in new set-ups. Have you got algae eaters?

Good luck with the new lighting, don't forget you may need to boost your CO2 and possibly ferts to keep things balanced. Floating plants may be a good idea too initially.

Anyway, great work!

Cheers gf225.
Having problem with the vallis, just can't seem to get any growth going at all, do you think the lighting upgrade will sort it out. Will the floating plants not defeat the object as far as lighting intensity for the Glossotigma etc. Please advise. On the algae front I'm just using the ammano shrimps at present, Can't see them really making an impact if I do get a bloom at some point.

you're lighting should help vallis, it often takes a while to get established. I thought of some floaters just above a part of the tank which doesn't have high-light plants, you may not need them at all though. I have 7 Amanos in my tank, never see them though, shame!

Likewise with the amanno's gf225. Hope they're still there, The last time I seen one it seemed to have grown somewhat. Thanks for the post.

The tank is a Juwel Rekord 70, The hood lets the whole thing down with a fitted ballast and only one standard tube, I've replaced it with an Interpet Daylight Plus
and I'm currently involved in a spot of diy to modify the hood, whilst still keeping its overall nice look. I have all the necessary equipment now to install another tube with reflector. The second tube will be an Aqua-Glo from Hagen.
I have all the specs etc if you need to know..
I'm going to post a bit of a walkthrough with pics of the hood modification over this weekend in the diy section, to show others how I did it.

See lighting upgrade walkthrough now posted in DIY section.....

Everything seems to be going fine at the moment, except for Vallis (background left) maybe replace with Amazon Sword.
Where do I start on making my tank like this, I have a 125litre Juwel tank and I want to add plants like this but maybe not so many, I have never added plants to my tank so where do I start, do I have to get sand or gravil I aint got a clue can u guys help.

To attain a tank like this, you need to break it down into segments and do your research on each. These tanks don't just happen, it takes a lot of time and effort on the owners behalf.
It all depends how far you are prepared to go with this I think. There are the so called purists (like myself, lol) or people who like to do things on a shoestring. I'm not knocking the shoestring crowd, far from it, I've seen some beautiful tanks in my time with ordinary gravel substrate and good lighting. Different people will have different views on how to do things is all I'm saying.
I would start with an under gravel heating cable again you can buy cheaply or expensive it's up to you. Seek advice and get one to suit you tank size. I say to buy this first only because it's no use wanting to install one at a later date.
For the substrate I bought some JBL Florapol substrate additive, I mixed this dry with enough unwashed fine gravel to cover the aquarium botton to a depth of 30mm, then on top of this I placed a further 30mm of washed fine gravel, then on top of that I placed a further 30mm layer of washed decorative silica gravel (a nice deep golden brown colour, gives the aquarium a real natural riverbed look.). Then I would address your lighting again seek advice from experts on this forum as to your ideal requirements for your specific tank. You will need to include CO2 at some point but this can be done later again cheaply, DIY method or Pressurised which is more expensive, the choice is yours...
Here I think you have the basis to proceed further if you want to.
As for the plants buy good stock initally potted are best, I take it you live in the UK if so moesy along to www.birstall.co.uk. Quite expensive I know but will pay dividends in the long run. Do your research and check out some planting plans.
Head here
http://www.dennerle.de/ENGLISCH/e_frameset.htm
click on aquascapes at the top then view all the different biotopes by clicking on them down the lefthandside.. There are planting diagrams with a legend of the plants to help you.
Again I think this will form the basis inorder for you to proceed.
If anyone else wants to add to this thread feel free, I've been in this hobby a long time, I'm no expert, and I'm still learning...
Hope this helps.

Are you sure? There are much better tubes out there IMO i.e. Interpet Triton Plus, Arcadia Freshwater Lamp, Hagen Life-Glo. Is it because you want the blue and red peaks? In which case the Triton would be better. All of these tubes are tri-phosphor and will give more output and last longer.

That's my 2 pennies worth mate!

I had the Hagen life-glo in my hand gf225 but coulden't make up my mind, I was worried about too much intensity and giving rise to an algae problem, no sweat though I'll give this aqua-glo a run out for a month or so and see what happens, if it's not working then I'll change it. Your right about the Tritons though, I used those in the early eighties in my Dupla set-up.(They were the original Tritons, not the plus versions of today) Thanks for your input gf225, always appreciated.
