I haven't been on here for a few years, so hello again :)

For the past few years I have been primarily keeping African Cichlids, My tank collection has gone down and down, Now I'm left with only one tank, A 6x2x2. My plan with this tank now is something I have always wanted to do, a huge shoal of Tiger Barbs!

I am finding information on large shoals quite hard to come by, It seems most people seem to keep them in very small numbers. I was thinking around 50-100 as a rough figure and I wondered if anyone had attempted them in these kind of numbers? If so what tank mates did you have success with if any? I'm hoping much like Mbuna higher numbers spread aggression, hopefully meaning they leave other fish alone.

So what do we think? Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated

The more the merrier and less able to pick on individuals I say!

Yes I'd hope to create there own little hierarchy thus causing them to leave other fish alone. I am primarily thinking of fish who can take care of themselves, but 100 tiger barbs are going to prove a handful for anything to small to eat them!

Go for a Red Tail/Ruby Shark or something.

The Tiger Barbs, just normal? Not tempted to mix any Greens in or something?

Could I suggest you consider taking on a common or sailfin plec that needs rehoming? There are a lot out there and not may people have a lovely big tank like yours for them to go to :)

i would love to have a huge shoal of tigers; they're going to look so awesome!

I would love a red tail shark, but then the tank is fast becoming semi aggressive lol!

Greens are actually my favourites, In an ideal world I'd go all green. But I'll probably mix all 3 varieties.

I don't think a sailfin would have a fin for long with tiger barbs......anyone tried it?

Ive had tiger barbs with a sailfin without any problems. I also had albino green and normal tiger barbs but they never swam together, they were always in there own colour groups.
You need to get a pic of this when its done, would love to see 100 tiger barbs together lol.

I've kept a variety of different plec species with tigers and the tigers never bothered them.

I'll let the plants establish before I go adding a 1 foot long plec.......good to know tigers will leave them be as well :)

If they truly shoal separately that would be brilliant, 3 distinct shoals would look incredible.

You could try get a couple of each and breeding them, use the fry to build your numbers up.

My Mrs would hate you....Me on the other hand I like you!

She won't want me setting up breeding tanks sadly :(

haha, if they wasn't such savages you could use the 6ft as breeding tank. But because they eat the eggs it would be bit of a pickle.
It would save you quite abit of cash in the long run though.

Yea there is no way the eggs will survive, If she sees then laying eggs I may well get "ordered" to save them! I'm fairly sure i'll get a few pairs at one point or another.

Have you started this up yet?
Still in the process of getting all the stuff I need, Wood etc. I was African cichlids for years, I have next to nothing for planted tanks! I've got all my wood now, I've decided i will be going soil base capped with play sand. I've bought a 4 bulb t5 light, which I may run along side my existing 2 bulb one, for 6 bulbs in total.

I know it's a slow process! I plan to do a journal when I get into it though

Also I still haven't found any info on large shoals of tiger barbs in aquariums.....
