hey guys had 2 batches of fry and counted 60 fry about 2 weeks ago, up till yesterday had 14 remaining, not sure why the others died, i wasnt expecting to have all 60 survive but none just takes the mick!

well today i came home and the 14 i thought were gonna make it and survive were all dead, ive lost 60 babies,

so naturally i thought to check the water stats, and they arent perfect but i dont think they're fatal,
Temp - 26 degrees ammonia - 0.25 nitrite - 1 nitrate - 5 PH - 7.4

are they really that bad, its a 3 gallon tank and i have a airstone and fluval 1 running, been feeding liquifry often and little about 6 times a day, got a piece of bogwood 2 small plants and a rock in there

any ideas guys? thanks

Your ammonia and nitrite should be untraceable, so that could be a reason.

INCORECT Ammonia and nitrite should be 0. Fry can not tolerate them at all.

60 fry was alot in such a small tank, with feeding the water quality will soon go bad.
If you want to raise fry you need a bigger tank say 8 to 10 gallons.
Bless them R.I.P.

Tank size / filter probably did it. With that No of fish even in a larger tank you often find the filters dont cope as well (if your running a fry filter) and you will have to do more regular water changes to keep the stats down.

I had 45 fry in my old QT tank for about 3 months. All guppy fry. Was a 50ltr and I was having to do daily water changes after a few weeks to keep the levels down. Any ammonia or Nitrite levels will kill fry, they just arent as hardy as larger fish are. I ended up giving mine to a mate.

you can get some pretty good small tanks quite cheap with filter and heaters for around £50, including gravel and some meds.

was platty fry, i was getting a new tank at the time, i got it now 12x18x15, that a good enough size? :)

Hi aluno :)

Liquifry can pollute the water quickly and fry tanks benefit from daily water changes. You might want to consider raising some microworms to get your fry off to a good start until they are eating flake and other more substantial foods on a regular basis. These tiny creatures will live in the water up to a day so they are less likely to breed harmful bacteria than the liquid fry foods and can be easily removed.

seems like you lost fry as well as i did :(
it is sad when they die and you don't know why and not where to beging from.
i hope all is well for next time you have more fry and sorry to hear.
my post about my situation can be found here if you are interested in reading a bit.

Your right. Liquifry can feed microoganisms, which, even if not harmful, may rob the water of O[sup]2[/sup]

thanks for the sympothy guys was actually suprised at how upset i got, realy thought i wouldnt care but oh how i was wrong, a mistake never to be repeated.

is it best to leave fry tanks bare?

They are cleaned eaiser when bare. But gravel means more beneficial bacteria room. So it is a toss over. What filter do you use? I am using a Sponge Filter, the Senior Dirt MAgnet. Filters up to 25 gallon's, and it works wonder's. Full of bacteria, so no water issues!
