any ideas or was this just his time to die ive had him 3 years but bought him when he was already about 4"

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Can you post your water stats please.

The string from the gills did it look like a parasite with a forked tail.
Or did it look like a string of cotton.

tank 90 gallon
fish with 8 discus 3 clowns i common plec 2 densil barbs and a few hatchet fish

stats are all zero ph 6.4 kn 3 gh 10

not sure about a fork as i said it was only about 3mm

Rare to have a nitrate reading of 0.
Whats your tap nitrate reading, do you have live plants in the tank.
Strands can be columarnis to parasites.
Anchor worm can look like cotton with a forked tail.
Was the fish flicking and rubbing.
Any red pierce marks on other fish.

Look under anchor worm and columnaris.

sorry nitrate is 100, i know water is good as the discus are breeding

rest of fish seem fine

A nitrate reading of 100 nots good then when it start to become harmful.
Whats your tap nitrate reading.
How often do you do a gravel vac and water change.
When did you last squeeze one of your filter sponges in tank water.

gravel vac and 40% every 5 days
tap nitrate never tested it!!
filter was done about 2 months ago...

If your tanks filter sponges are really mucked up squeeze one slightly in tank water.
Only touch one as you do the others in a week or fortnight time.
Do a test on your tap water.
