I currently have a 5g tank sitting empty and a 10g that is currently housing young corries, but will soon be empty. I was thinking of maybe making the 5g a shrimp tank and the 10g a betta tank... any opinions on this?
I'd be willing to hear any other ideas you might have.
also, are there any other fish that can go in with the shrimp &/or betta? i've not had shrimp or bettas before...

With Bettas you want to avoid anything that can be a bit nippy like some tetras.
And with the shrimp Neon tetras should be ok and anything small, I also think cories are ok with shrimp.

:good:

shrimp and betta mix long if the shrimp are large also oto's will mix.

I've got a Betta in with my shrimp and Otos and they get along fine.

Mmm...

If I were you I'd keep it simple.

5g shrimps
10g betta

You can think of adding something later on. It's a lot easier to add stock than remove it.

A 5g shrimp tank and 10g betta tank sounds nice to me. 10g would be a good size for a betta, and you'd be able to also have some other small fish too such as a group of pygmy cories or microrasbora if you wanted. You could alternatively divide it and keep 2 bettas, though I personally would go for a single male.

Have you had any thoughts on shrimp species, if that's what you decide?

I'm thinking of cherry shrimp, but i'm not really sure what's available around here.... i'll have to check that out. Is it ok to mix shrimp species? it might be interesting to have the different colors, but i'm not sure if it's ok in such a small tank.

I'd definitely be having only the 1 betta... do you know how many of the pygmy corries or microrasbora i could have in with the betta? would i be able to have a few ottos as well, or is that pushing it? could any of these go in with the shrimp? what other choices do i have for the 5g? how may shrimp would be best to get?

Sorry for all the questions, but it's hard to figure out all of this even with searching the internet.

6celestial pearl danio
trio scarlet badis

I've never heard of the last two, and although they are neat, i don't believe my lfs gets those. I'd like to avoid buying fish online as i'm rarely home during the day. thanks for the idea though!

In the 5g you can start with 10 shrimp. Once they settle they will start breeding in no time.

I'm not sure though if it's a good idea to put any fish in the 5g. I consider a limit for any fish 30 litres (approx 8 gallons) and even then a very limited choice, but it's a personal evaluation.

As I said, if I were you I would keep it simple. Just shrimp in the 5g and just a betta in the 10g, and see how it goes.

I have found this phrase very helpful when deciding stocking for a tank, so I will repeat it: it's a lot easier to add stock than to remove it.

You can always add otos at a later date if you see the tank can support them, but it won't be as easy to take them out once they're in and you are going to make a right chaos in such small tanks in trying to catch them.

great! thanks for the input. I have to get a new lid for the 5g as the light fixture inside is broken, but as soon as i do i'll be setting it up! the betta will have to wait until i find homes for my cory fry that are in the 10g at the moment.

If anyone has any other suggestions, i'm all ears!
