Hey all. I just purchased a 56 gallon tall aquarium. 30L X 18D X 24H. I have heard many times that longer aquariums are far more efficient than the taller ones but i really felt that the demensions would fit nicely in the lack of space that i have in my room. I was wondering what kinds of fish would do well in this tank? I was really thinking about getting some African Cichlids as I absolutely love thier colors. i have also considered a saltwater setup and then there is the part of me that wants to do a peaceful community tank with lots of neon or cardinal tetras. In the end it is up to the fish's needs. What would do well in this tank? Better yet what types of fish would thrive in this tank? thanks all. I look forward to your support.

Cichlids may be difficult as the lack of width means there is little space for fish to create decent territories. Although ask in one of the cichlid forums if you want a definitive answer. Setting up a salt water tank is also not a small undertaking and should not be considered lightly. They are far more time consuming to maintain and setup + a lot more expensive to run when they are. The fish themselves cost a hell of a lot more so if things go wrong you can end up losing hundreds of pounds of stock. Head down to the marine forum and have a look through some of the journals people have written about setting up a marine tank. Your easiest option is definitely a tropical community tank. A tall one like that gives you loads of planting option as there are many plants which simply get too tall for a normal height tank. I would recommend this third option. I would go for a single massive piece of wood to fill out the whole tank, loads of strong planting with big tall species, a nice easy CO2 fermentation system and then go for lots of large slow moving fish. Again, your lack of width means that fast moving species such as danios are not an option. However, you could go for a single big Angel Fish or Gourami and build you tank around them. Good Luck.

:good:

I agree with Jonesy, the tropical community would be the most suitable option, mainly due to wideth. African and mairne fish need wide tanks, as they require large rock strutures. Africans need them for teritory, marines need the rock for filtration in most cases, as will as teritory.
The only ting I dissagree on, is the CO2 system. In that sized tank, you would need 4 fermantation chambers, meaning that you would be playing with yeast mixtures 2-4 times a week, to keep CO2 stable, and prevent algea growth. If you are going planted, a pressurised system is what you need. You can build your own from parts on Ebay, for arround £60, or you can purchase ready built systems for arround £120. Dernale are a good kit brand :good:

Yes :good: You will want to keep an eye on the kribs though, as some are agressive. It is rare to have a pair that are agressive toward tetras thogh, unless they get too close thile they are breeding.
