hi all. i will soon be starting my next tank project. its gonna be 55g and i was just thinking on some stocking ideas. id like a decent sized school of tetra. may be cardinal or rummy nose. was thinking about barbs tiger or green. not sure though as they have a reputation for being nippy. any ideas would be welcome folks. thanks.

With barbs, big school and not much else. Tigers are great, but not friendly.

With tetras, big school. Nice shoal of corys. Otos or a plec. If you want centerpiece rams. Perhaps a school of hatchets for the top, with a tight lid.

Or big school of rasboras, nice shoal of khulis, and gouramis as a centerpiece.

if you want a big school, my favurite are harlequin rasboras. I have never had any problems with those.(except for one time when my little brother dumped out their holding container while I cleaned the tank

For the tetras the only tetra I have had school are the rummy nose tetras I started with 6 of them and they schooled so well that I took there numbers to 10 and the colour on their nose and tail are amazing under good lighting.

Neon tetras are also nice but don't really school which rules them out.

As for the barbs I have always avoided because I had a bad experience with both the tiger and green barbs for nipping fins and being overly aggressive. I got very friendly with my local fish shop owner and he suggested trying 5 banded barbs. He promised me that they would not nip and if they did he would take them back and replace any fish that the 5 banded barbs had nipped. The 5 banded barbs have been amazing they have not nipped anything including live plants. They look the same as tiger barbs without the aggression and my ones also school. I have 6 off them and they always follow each other round the tank and are lovely fish to watch. I cannot stop recommend the 5 banded barbs as they are one of my favourite fish in my tank.

thanks guys. my current thinking is cardinals, rummy nose, rams and corys. wanted kuhlis but the missus thinks they look too much like snakes. lol. she loves corys though so they are her pick.
