my jack dempsey is like 3 inch with only pearls on the gill covers and alittle on the top fin.

nelly... thats funny, was gonna do a post with a bachelor service for him, try to see if I could get him a date!! Haha

suicidal... it seems like my little guy has always shown his color spots. They really started to come in when I moved him into his current tank from a 30G (maybe december of last yr I think). He's about 6 inches or maybe a little bigger with his tail fin.

Hes been lethargic for awhile but I contribute that to me having a powerhead in the tank in which I don't think he likes. They live in slow muddy streams in the wild so he is probably loving the almost calm waters, but now that I took out the powerhead he is out and about stirring up trouble

As of late too, I don't think hes afraid of me anymore, just now sees me as a bigger fish that is trying to move in on his territory and gets quite aggressive when i come near the tank (gets right next to the glass, flairs his fins and trys to look intimidating)

Hey, ox5477, I was thinking of trading in some of my fish and getting a very small Jack Dempsey. Only about an inch long. Is their anything extra I should know about them? Does their temperment vary or do they all tend to be aggressive?

They are like other animals that can be varying in temperment. generally more aggressive than alot of fish but can be very docile (for a cichlid) too

Yep, for a fish, they are agressive, but for a cichlid they are very peaceful. The chunky body and big mouth are more to say "dont mess with me, 'cos I cant be bothered to do anything if you do" than anything elce.
