im setting a 55 g tank up and would like some ideas on the stocking

id like dwarf cichlids and im planting the tank out (real plants)

Daz :)

All dwarf breeds would work good. You can have 2 (or maybe three if heavily planted) pairs in your tank along with other community fish. You might be able to do a pair of firemouths but that might be pushing it a bit (depends if having tank mates with them or just the firemouths). But look at the forum New world cichlid index and pick out your fav (rams, apistos, keyholes, checker)

Hi

Cockatoo dwarf cichlids are a great little fish. They are great in community tanks but will become territorial when spawning. I've had them before and they were really cool 8) I agree with ox5477 you could have 2 or 3 pairs of dwarfs but make sure you leave a lot of room so they can build territories.

You could try a colony of apistogramma in a tank that size, especially if it is heavily planted. Something like 2 males and 5 females. I've read accounts of people doing this with success. You will need lots of caves and wood in there to create territories.

Your best bet would be to try and obtain around 10 or more young fish and then remove problem fish as they mature until you end up with a good group with a ratio of 2-3 females per male. You should be able to have 2 males in a tank that size.

I think it would be a really nice setup. Lots of choices for interesting tankmates too.
