Hi I just acquired my first large tank (I've had a Betta in a 10 gallon for 2 years) and I have started my cycle, now I am looking for the right fish to put in it.

I would like to have a community tank with all Central and South American species in it. I have picked out a list of fish based on this and I wanted to post them here and make sure that they will get along before I start putting them in my tank.

Here is what I have thought of so far:

  • Corydora (preferably panda)
  • Guppies
  • Black Tetra
  • Zebra Pleco
  • Platy
  • Mystery Snails
  • Shrimps

Will this community of fish get along ok? It seems that they all have similar temperature and pH needs, but I am not sure about temperment ect. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Hi welcome to the forum! No problems at all with any of the fish on there in the mix. Only problem I see is the zebra pleco they cost around £130 for a 2 inch baby but there are similar ones but not that white and black mix as defined.

Sounds like a very nice community to me. I like themed tanks. I started out w/an Amazon theme in mine, but it's evolved into something quite a bit more global! I would choose guppies OR platys rather than doing them both for purely asthetic reasons. When you say black tetra, do you mean a black skirt or black neon tetra? They're both nice and i think both would go nicely with your tank.

Have fun w/your new 55 gallon!!

I plan on having the black skirt tetra, it has such an interesting shape.

Does anyone have any suggestions for plants in a tank like this?
