I have a choice between buying a long and a hex each able to hold 55-gallons.

Ive had a 55 long but just wanted to see what the pros and cons were with the 55 hex cuz I am pretty curious.

Those in the know please add a comment or two and let me know what Im getting myself into with this one. Have your fish acclimated well to this environment....just so you know I plan on either a clown tank or a freshwater plant tank with smaller type fish such as puffers, gouramis, and the like....

Definitely the long. Main advantage being a bigger surface area so better oxygen levels in tank which will benefit your fish. Also much longer swimming area which many species prefer. A long tank will also not be as high so light will penetrate to the bottom better, so less chance of algae problems on substrate.

The hex, will not do any of the above + is more awkward to clean as its deeper it can also be tricky to attach things within it as well as you don't have a nice long 4 foot length of glass. I don't know how you attach a backing to one either + they look very 1980s and dated.

:good:

A long just gives you so many more options, in terms of territories, swimming space etc- opens up the opportunity for many more species.
