I got a used 55 gal the other day, it looked great, but then I filled it up.

The big issue is that the top of the tank, the black plastic stuff in the front, is cracked up in a form that just screams glass bowing.

Now, we were planning on fixing that up with some high grade epoxy, but I was doing some research, and the glass's thickness is 6 mm, whereas where I look around, people are saying best keep it at 8-12 mm

I took all the tank water out, and not surprisingly, the crack up top wasn't visible anymore. So the bar on top was just barely holding on.

What do you think? Risky? Is it worth trying my luck in making it an aquarium, or should I sell it as a terrarium online and get a better structure?

I wouldnt risk it, and sell it. You dont want water everywhere if it cracks
If you can get the same amount as you paid, or near it, it would be good.

Sounds like maybe it was made to be a terrarium. Could you imagine 55 gallons of water and fish on your floor? The thought scares the heck out of me. If I set that tank up, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night!

Just add an extra brace over the top of the existing one. My parents ran a 55 with a metal bracket overtop a crack brace for a long time.

Well thats a nice idea, shift it to someone who might not realise and let them deal with 55gals of water on their floor??

Get it fixed or scrap it. Its not worth the risk if your not going to repair it properly, not for your floor, or the fish...

Jeez, i did wonder if it was too early to be drunk ;)

As posted above, if you really want to keep it, i would just throw in a couple of brace bars across the top. Fill it with water in the garden (level and on something) for a week or so, keep an eye on the split in the plastic in the front, measure it each day if it makes you feel any better, and you might be able to save it.

hope this helps :)
