So I was out shopping earlier today and notice a real good deal on a 55 gallon kit. I've been busy searching craigslist for used components for my future set up and the prices, even for used didn't compare to the deal this kit was selling for. I did a research on the kit components and wanted you guys to chime in on it.
1 - All-Glass 55 Gallon aquarium 48-1/4"L x 12-3/4"W x 20-13/16"H (black trim, clear seal) comes with a lifetime leak warranty
2 - All-Glass 24" flourescent hoods w/lamps (branded)
1 - Whisper/Top Fin PF-60 HOB filter
1 - Marineland Visi-Therm 200w heater (white boxed, branded on heater)

The only thing I would add to this kit is probly the Marineland Emperor 400 HOB to assist the Whisper PF-60 filter.
I mean the kit itself is selling less then the cheapest 55 Gallon used tank setup and it doesn't even have a warranty.

But I might be going over my head on this one so any suggestions would be great! Thanks again!

As long as you have the space to house it, the bigger the tank you can afford, the better.

I started with a Rio240 back in April, I now have a Korrall60 and a 5-footer too!

www.seapets.co.uk is a good place to chaeck out new tank deals, which you could then get a local store to price match. My local Maidenhead Aquatics did this for me, all they wanted was a printout of the complete offer ;)

55 is a nice starter size but you will want bigger in no time! I must admit though I would rather get an external filter than a HOB but thats just me! Complete with warranty you cant go wrong!

I am new to tropical fish also. I started with a 55 gallon and I love it. If you have the space it gives you room for a variety of fish..in my experience. There are a lot of really helpful people on here and I am sure they will give you some good pointers...I know they have been a wonderful help to me and my fish.

Yeah I think I'm going to go ahead and pick it up! It only works out to $150 USD for the whole set up and it includes a lifetime warranty!
The only reason I don't think I would want to upgrade to even a bigger tank is because of the weight that the tanks start to get. I think a 100 gallon weighs in about 900 lbs ! That's alot of weight in the living room with wood beams underneath!

I would expect a kit like the one you are watching to cost about $150 brand new. That would not be a phenomenally good price but would be an average, call it typical, price. I have bought tank kits at around that price for about that amount and actually felt cheated compared to buying something new from a place like Kijiji or E-bay or even Craigslist. On line sources of equipment can lead to much lower price to value relationships.
