Hi, I will be getting a 40g (uk) tank soon (101cm long) & would like to keep cichlids, are CA & SA species too large for this tank, does anyone have any suggestions please?
thanks.

You could keep rainbow, sajica (T-bar), convicts or firemouths, or go for the dwarf varieties like rams and apistos and have more fish.

If you kept convicts they're better as a species alone as they are very aggressive.

Depending of the heigth, you could have some angels. Some keyholes, some Blue acaras. THere is a lot you could put in this tank really like this:

1 pair of keyholes
1 trio of apistogramma or rams
1 bristlenose
shoal of tetra
Some Rainbow fish

Just a suggestion. If I am correct this tank is about a 3.5 footer? 40-50 US gallons? If in the 40-50 USG range, then this stocking is possible. If it is anything less than 35USG, I would not do this stocking.

that's right, 47US gallons, i'm going to check out the cichlids you've listed online & see what i think, thanks for the advice.

Yeah man. If your tank was this size, it would be a really nice setup! Hope you can chose between this or Africans.

edging towards the south americans, would be a sandy/woody/planted biotope i assume, softer water?

Correct. I would go with the south american setup in this case. I think that they are more suited for a 47 USG tank.

if you like the convicts but want a community how about honduran red points like mine if you can get hold of them :) - see display pic - similar fish just no where near as aggressive - I have fry in the tank at the moment and while they guard off the other fish things have been very calm :) Small article about them in this months PFK as well

Also some of the other cryptoheros species are very nice as well and some are not as aggressive as the convicts and some can be mixed with other fish

Just curious, not like I am going to get them, but how much did you pay for them, what tank size are they in, and how big do they get.

paid £6 each - male gets to around 4 inch female stays around 3 usually less and they are in a 3 foot 30g tank :)

Sorry, just got really curious. That means that they are classified as dwarfs. THe less common dwarfs. I have never seen or heard of them until you care around. They do look like convicts, but I don't like the look of convicts, lol.
