I would not buy fish from Petco but their tanks are fine. Through October 4 you get 40% off on a tank purchase if you order on line.

I am most definitely not a fan pf Petco. I have one problem with them which relates to tanks, For years they sold Aqueon tanks. That is the current name for the old AllGlass brand. But now they are trying to ditch Aqueon and maybe even Perfecto in favor of the Petco brand tanks, Imagitarium.

If you look at a Pecto site you will see that Imagitarium tanks are on Sale but the Aqueon Tanks are on Clearance. So for those of you who do not know the who story here it is.

Over the past 10-15 years there has been a consolidation of the pet industry. A lot of the brands were knew and loved were bough out by conglomerates. This includes Pecto which is now a part of the pet division of Spectrum Brands. Aqueon is also part of a conglomerate but they still manufacture tanks in the USA.

From The Google AI: here are Aqueon tanks made"

Aqueon tanks are made in the United States, specifically in Franklin, Wisconsin, by the company of the same name, which was formed from the old All-Glass Aquarium company. The company is known for producing American-made aquatic products and is a retailer of aquarium products, not a manufacturer for other brands.

Manufacturer: Aqueon is the brand and the manufacturer of the tanks.
  • Location: Their operations and manufacturing are based in Franklin, Wisconsin.

  • History: Aqueon inherited its tank manufacturing from the former All-Glass Aquarium company, which was also based in Wisconsin.

  • Products: Aqueon offers a range of products for aquarium enthusiasts to create and maintain aquatic environments.

Note, according to the Google AI:
Aqueon is owned by Central Garden & Pet, a company that owns a wide portfolio of brands in the pet and garden industries. Aqueon is part of Central Garden & Pet's Central Aquatics brand, which provides a complete line of aquarium products.

And also from the Google AI:

Imagitarium tanks are made in China, according to multiple sources on a Facebook group and Reddit discussing the brand. These tanks are Petco's private store brand, and some community members believe they are produced in China to be a cheaper alternative to other tank brands.

Key Points
  • Origin: Imagitarium tanks are made in China.
  • Brand: Imagitarium is a store brand owned by Petco.
  • Purpose: The brand was introduced as a more affordable option, leading to the use of manufacturing in China.

Apparently Petco is not open about saying where their tanks are made. So I would suggest that you do your own research before you buy. Personally I have been loyal AllGlass/Aqueon buyer for some time. I refuse to buy Imagitatrium.

I started buying fish stuff in Jan 2001. I can tell you for sure that the quality of many great brands has declined as those brands were bought by conglomerates whose main goal is to make greater profit from them. IMO, the quality if many things in the hobby has gone down over the past 25 years.

One final observation, I am selling off a lot of my quarium supplies as I am doing major downsizing. I Havenot had to buy an aquarium in some time. In order to price the theings i am selling I wanted to find out the current prices for them i purchased new. What I discovered is many of the tank sizes are no longer made by the main tank mabufaturers.

Try and find a 30 gal breeder or a 33 long. You will have to turn to Seapora to find them and the prices are not chap and I never saw any sales on them. I have 5 x 33 longs, a 30B and 2 x 40 longs I have for sale. Try and find these new at a cheap price or at all. I do have a few that were made by https://glasscages.com/

I'm picking up some tanks for free today... :)

I've seen reports that Imagitarium tank leak though i have not tried them myself. Aqueon were sloppy silicon and not great quality and while the new imagitarium seem to have cleaner silicon it is so clean it is not 'completely' covering the joints.

Oh well life sucks and then you drown.

A lot of aquariums sold in Australia are made in China too. We still have some shops that make tanks but the imported ones are so much cheaper the shops can't really compete.

My Imagitarium and Aqueon tanks are three years old. So far, so good. Fingers crossed.

The new imagitarium build (not the rebrand) did not exist 3 years ago.

I saw these imagitarium products online today. It seems they made their aquariums and lids a unique size so you can't use an aqueon lid on an imagitarium aquarium or vice versa. I also read some reviews that reported that despite buying both imagitarium aquarium and lid, tolerances were not consistence and the lid kept falling into the aquarium.

Does anyone know if petco will cease carrying aqueon lids and aquariums?

I have a few tanks doing OK which are decades old. But nothing is guaranteed. My first used tank was a 75 gal. it was my in-wall tank. I had it about 10 years when it started to leak. I do not reseal, I throw out leakers and get a replacement tank.

I have had AllGlass tanks leak but I have had many more last a very long time. My 30B ran great for about 18 years before i took it down. It still holds water fine, but I do not need or use it any longer. Today, I only have 11 tanks running but 3 are plecos tanks and have no plants. The other 8 are my typical planted jungles.

I got my 150 and 125 used about 15 years ago, they were both several decades old at the time. The 150 recently developed a slow leak amd I moved its contents to the 125 which was empty but ran just fine.

My mother taught me a great lesson which I embraced in terms of keeping fish:
"In the long run, the cheapest solution is usually the one which costs the most up front."

So I will leave you all with the following tune

I have aqueons from before my move, and Chinese made ones. I can report absolutely no difference in quality, from what I can see. My newest bought tanks run about 10 years old now, when I purchased a pile of American and a few Chinese 10 gallons, as well as most of my larger, Chinese made ones. All are good, all are quality.

I looked at some Chinese tanks at the fish store today, and they were solid. We're in a situation where consumers generally prefer Chinese over US made, so a lot of stores seem to have new brands on offer. You have to look closely.

A lot of corporations are reworking their packaging to hide where things are made. They respond quickly when under consumer pressure, by ducking and covering up. I was reading labels on breakfast cereals and few of the products I suspected were US made are suddenly produced from thin air, apparently. I imagine Chinese origins don't sell as well in the USA, just as USA products take a hit here. The labels reflect that, and if that matters to you, you have to do a little extra digging.

So if I were in the US, I'd go by price, ideally after taking a good look at the tanks. Everyone cuts corners to compete.

I believe so and all they are selling is old stock.

I wanted to buy a lid for my 29 since the hinge wore out after 7 years and the only source i could find for hinges were more than the original lid.
