Ok, so my girlfriend is wonderful and happened to walk up on a 40 gallon tank the other day at a great price, and picked it up for me. I put it in storage until after the holidays when I will have a spot for it. . . tree is in the way. Are there any new world cichs that I could keep in this tank. I was thinking of maybe trying to breed a pair of cons in it, but I would like to know if I have any other options for it. Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

Buy a nice pair of cons like a pink one or I saw a pink/black one the other day! Cons are awesome fish really active and they are easy and fun to breed.

I'd go for some apisto's, like a harem of apistogramma cacatuoides. In a 40 long you may be able to house 2 or 3 types of apisto's with plenty of caves & plants, however when (and if) breeding occurs, it may start to feel a bit crowded depending on how territorial they are.

Apistos, Rams or Keyholes would do nicely in a 40. Plus, any of these will work in a community setup if the tankmates are chosen well. Any more than one species may be pushing your luck. Apistos for instance can be kept in a harem of 1m with 3f in a 40gal.

edit: Oh, BTW hang onto that girlfriend of yours, she sound like a keeper! :D

The tank came with a divider too, another option I was thinking was to move my blue rams there in order to properly breed them, maybe make a little money :D ! As the keep breeding in their community setup, but can't seem to keep the fry, darn tetra. So many choices. I really like some of the apisto's I've seen pictures of, but I haven't seen them in any of my local shops. It'd be nice to have a breeding tank though. hmmmm

In my area I have to talk to my LFS to request specific apisto's. Usually they aren't everyday-stock, but if you ask the right people at the LFS you can usually get ahold of some nice fish if you don't mind the suspence and anticipation of waiting for the order to arrive.... The anticipation can make it all the sweeter when you get what you're looking for, though... :shifty:
