I've used plain tetrracotta pots as caves with no problems. The worst has been trying to remove the glue from the sticky label. I had to sand it off rather than use some chemical to remove it as terracotta is porous.

Also remember to boil your stuff before placing them in, especially if you got them from outside. If they're from a shop you probably don't need to do that, but I would just to be safe.

Just to add to the super glue comments. Super glue is indeed fish safe but only if it is cyanoacrylate with no additives.

I use sewing thread. It can be fiddly, much easier if you have someone else to put their finger on the knot when you tie it off.
