Just got a 40 Gallon US tank. I wanna keep 2-4 good sized fish and am wondering what fish are a good size for a 40 gal?

hmmm, i think some malawian or tanganykan cichlids wold fit the bill. some species which top my list are the yellow labs, blue or yellow peacocks, tretocephalus' (or the smaller similar looking, cylindricus), or the bumblebee cichlid. these are a few that i like but you should do more research yourself. also, angels, discus, gouramis, or some sharks would look stunning in your aquarium. its all up to you, these are some suggestions.

I really like discus and angels but didnt know that a discus could fit in a 40 gal. If I got 1 discus 1 angel and some kind of pleco would that work?

No, discus are shoaling fish and can't fit in a 40g unless it's a breeding pair.

plecos would be fine in any aquarium set-up except for a few. unfortunatly, (don't exactly know why) discus' should be housed with plecos only with caution (research this further, am not exactly sure) also, you should have discus' housed within groups and a solo discus would't be to good of an idea. also, a group of discus in a 40 gallon is too much. so, with you're set-up, discus aren't going to work. but, a pleco and a group of angelfish would work perfectly fine. a group is the best thing to do because it will let them pair off. if you don't want a group, in my experience, you can observe an angel tank and them see which ones are swimming together or are not bothering each other. then, you pick the fish which are displayed those characteristics.

hope this helps, KeeperOfFishyPeace

Hmmm I guess Ill do angels and a pleco ill go onto the pleco forum and ask about them thanks guys

If you go for plecos, make sure you avoid the common pleco and the sailfin, as they both grow too big for the tank. A bristlenose would be good in there, though, and they are lovely creatures. OR you could do a clown plec. If it were my tank, I would go for one of these two options and a trio of pearl gouramis (1 male, 2 females)- very beautiful fish IMO.

I actually have made the final decision to make it a pleco only tank I plan to put a clown and rubbernose and one or 2 more if possible.

I think the reason you can't keep Plecos with Discus is because Pleco's act as a parasite attaching themselves to it and sucking on it, isn't that the reason?
