Preferably, I like sand. But I've heard of problems with the sand mixing with the laterite and that can be a problem.

I like the 3mm gravel. Well actually though, it has a size range, from 1-3mm and it is really very large sand. It also blends and mixes well with most of the nutrient-rich substrate and anchors plants without smothering the delicate HC and Glosso. But sand has been used by others here with great success.

I've seen somewhere a mix of both sand and gravel. Looked like a stream or river bed and looked really nice :) Something I'd consider doing some day. But I voted gravel, small pea grave in the 1 - 3 mm range looks nice, and with some added small stones can look really good.

To be honest, for plant growth, there isn't really much to chose between them. So go for whichever you prefer the look of :) I have gravel at the moment but will try sand at some stage no doubt.

IMO Sand looks better and is also a better barrier between the nutrient rich substrate that you put under it than gravel.

Also the plecs like to play in it, and MTS love to trawl through it.

i voted sand as i like sand, when i saw the results sand had the most votes, the larger gravel had no vote.
