Hi everyone so I was wondering how many rams I could put in a 36 gal. u.s. Right now I have some guppies and neons in there, but they are being moved to another tank that I'm and going to set up very soon. So I wanted to put some rams in the 36gal, I was also wondering if it would not be wise to put angelfish and rams together? I wanted to have some fish that are very interesting and used to very soft water, any advice?

-Thanks Lisa :D

I have rams and angelfish and they get along fine. Although I would not put more than one pair of rams together in a tank, multiple males and females will fight. So, if you want a peaceful tank only a pair!!!

I also have both Angelfish and Ram together. They don't seem to bother each other...

As said, a pair of Ram, and 3 or 4 Angelfish should do fine! What is the height of the tank?

Thank you all for replying,I greatly appreciate it. :) As for my tank, it is 19 inches tall around 11 inches wideand around 31 inches long. I know that it is a little taller than some average 36 gallons, but hopefully it won't be a problem. I was also wondering what little schooling fish can go with them or will they be bullied? Sorry about all the questions but how do I know if the pair of rams I get, like each other? I read that you are suposed to buy a bunch of juveniles rams and let them pair up,but I only have room for 2. :/ I have 10 gallon that I'm setting up but I doubt that could house a ram :(

Thank you for your help,
- Lisa

Also how hardy are Angelfish and Rams? I have very soft water ....what conditions should they generally have?

-thank you again :)

i also have both and they do fine. I wouldnt put 3-4 angels in it thou as they get big and are territorial. I would only do a pair of each. as far as hardiness.... i think they are my ph is kinda high for them but i was told instead of trying to lower that so long as the ph stayed consistant they would adjust, its when the levels change constatly they stress. now as for the schooling fish... i have von rio tetras in mine and they look very nice together. Von rios are of the smaller variety and it is possible that they will be eaten but from what i understand if you grow them up together and feed them well then its less likely to happen. But a nice school of tetras (not neons) would look nice.

These guys can be treated like Discus and go for the 1 fish per 10 gallon rule. Just like Discus, if you get a pair the pair can get aggressive and fish will need to be moved around. Both tank bred Ram and Angel will do fine in a wide range of water parameters. My Ram breed regularly in a high Ph.

BubbleBaby,

The height of the tank is a good thing, the Rams won't mind and the Angel will prefer it. Angels need a 18' minimum anyways.

I think the pair should be okay, try to get M/F. I got a M+F and they just paired up. Might have been lucky, don't know. :dunno:

Both the Ram and Angels will do well in your soft water. They prefer these parameters but aren't limited to them. You will find that they are going to be very sturdy in those parameters. Just keep up on your 25-30% weekly water changes. :good:

A few other tank mates off the top of my head:
Bigger sized (peaceful) Tetras (small tetras like Neons and Cardinals will probably get eaten)
Small sized Pleco
Corydora (higher temp. species do better)
Gourami (stay away from bigger species like kissing gourami)

BTW, Keep the temperature anywhere from 80-84F.

WOW! thank you for all of the information :) I'm really excited for my new pets! I'll keep those ideas in mind when I purchse the fish and taking care of them. I'm going to take it one step at a time and hopefully this new adventure will go smoothly. thanks again!

Hey, just a quick question. :) Could I put hatchet fish in the tank with the angels and rams.......and I was wondering about crabs(would they get eaten? :()

Hactchets should do fine with those fish. You will have a good variety of fish, with Rams at the bottom, Angels in the middle, and Hatchets at the top :)

I believe most species of Crab get big, eat fish, and need to have platforms to come out of the water...

Inverts aren't my thing, but I don't think Crabs mix. You might want to double check on the Inverts section...

Cool, thank you :). I will look into the inverts. Any suggestions on some cool/interesting inverts? :)

miss out crabs! most easily available need brackish water, and somewhere to get out the water. they will also eat fish.

if you tank is well planted, you can get shrimp. Amano shrimp are large, but wont breed. Cherry shrimp are small, but will breed. if you have lots of plants, then the cherry shrimp babies might survive and you'll have loads :D very interesting to watch.

or you could get a bamboo shrimp :D these filter the water so need mature tanks, and may need a liquid feed.

you can also get snails :D ramshorns and nerites are great.

Cool, thank you. :) do you have any suggestions of inverts that are noticeale in a tank and interesting. :good:

Sorry I repeated myself, the reply didn't show so I did it again :good: . Anyway, do those snails have lots of babies, cuz I would rather not have a ton of snails everywhere. I had a mystery snail and it had babies. Are there any other shrimp that are not prolific breeders....I'm not sure I'm up for a ton of babie :/ even though babies are cute.

i'm not too fond of crabs or crayfishes or snails in my tank, the first two being rough on the fishes and the last for no reason
