Ive got a new 36 gallon and would like to put a pair of convicts in there. what else can i have in the tank with the convicts?? i know theyre agressive but im sure tiger barbs or mollys could be ok with them...maybe a couple of corrys too. whats the most or best combo i could have w/o the cons being in there?

You probably already know this but convicts breed very well ... just keep your eyes open before you get an overly full tank.

Pims pictus, eat up those fry before your over run ;)

Hope this helps

Temperament: These fish have a reputation for aggressive behaviour that is to some extent deserved - they have been known to herd larger fish to the other end of the tank and
even kill them, especially during breeding. Not really a suitable community fish, and best kept in
a species aquarium.

so i went ahead and bought my fish. i have 5 rose barbs, 6 tiger barbs, 2 pictus cats and 1 pleco. im going to look at convicts tomorrow and figure maybe the tank mates can hold there own since theyve been there first. if they dont get along im going to return him to the pet store. i think if i have just 1 convict he wont be as agressive??? then eventualy ill introduce a femal ONLY to see if theyre a 1/30 pair that arent agressive in communities. everything sound ok?? my first community tank ever and i wouldnt enjoy losing 40 bucks in fish! thanks guys

What sort of plec did you buy? If its a common plec then I would return it, these things get too big for a 36 gallon tank, not to mention the enormous amount of waste they produce. I really wouldn't advise a pair of convicts if you don't want to loose fish, I can see them killing the barbs when they breed and get abit bigger. They will see all of the tank as their territory and attack any intruders. If you really want a convict go for a lone female, this will reduce the aggression but won't cut it out all together.

just a common pleco...honestly i dont see what the big deal is..i had one for about 4 years and it only grew about 3-4 inches. i have a few years before i need to worry about that

i had a sail finn plec in my 35 gallon and it got to 12 inch like shroob said the amount of waste they produced was stupid i was hoovering everyday plus he will out grow the tank or he will get stunted.dont get me wrong good cleaners and good charactor but grow to big for some tanks.you could go back to the lfs and exchange it with a couple of bristlenoses they dont grow to big and they do a good job of cleaning aswell.convicts are nice to look at but got a horrible temperment even on there own they can be funny, have a read up on them in the fish profiles on here to learn a bit more about them hope this helps you :D

The plec you had before would not of been a common, to people who arnt familiar with the species alot can look alike but chances are it was a Bristlenose/Bulldog/Pitbull plec, or one of the other small ones :) Lets hope the one you have now also is one of the smaller species, as I assure you a common plec will grow alot larger then 4", in a very short space of time.
