Hi,

I have got a 35 gallon tank and at the moment have 2 Black Mollies, 4 Platties and 5 Neon tetras - do you think im already overstocked or could I add additional fish. Went into my Local tropical fish store and saw some really nice Boseman Rainbow fish but after reading about them have learnt that they can be aggressive and grow quite a bit?

I was thinking of buying 2/3 of these if I am not overstocked at the moment? Has anyone else had any of these fish - are they likely to attack all my other fish?

Thanks for any help given

No you are not yet overstocked. Normally the rule is 1" per gallon based on the fishes adult size although this can be stretched to 2" per gallon if you have a well cycled mature tank.

As for the rainbows, I'm not familiar with them but after searching on google it seems they have adult size of about 9cm so in the region of 3 - 4" so you should be ok with 2 or 3.

You're not overstocked.

I would probably go for a bigger tank for a school of bosemanis. Something in the 4 foot range. For all rainbows, you should keep them in a group of at least 5. They can get to be 5" and are pretty quick. They're also very active feeders. Get more females than males, or all males.

M. praecox (dwarf neon) may be a better rainbow for your setup. They don't get as big. The female m. praecox are also as colorful as the males.

Great - Thankyou both for your advice - im also thinking of getting 1 Siamese fighter as well but is good to know that im not over stocked at the moment.

I guess if I make sure that i keep testing my water regularly then it should be fine.

Have looked up quite a bit about siamese fighter fish and I think they should be fine with all the fish in the tank that i have at the moment

I have a siamese fighter and it is fine with all my fish listed in my sig.

Just be sure that if you ever add anymore fish in the future, to ensure the compatibility with the betta as guppies especially can get attacked if they are a similar colour to the betta.

I would not put a betta/siamese fighter in with rainbowfish. The betta will have a hard time getting anything to eat.

I second the Dwarf Rainbows. They are smaller and you could get a nice school. When they color up they are very nice. I must admit I have a single Boesman Rainbow in my 40 gallon tank. One of my original fish when I did not know better. But I must admit that he really does fine in the tank and is always around the middle of the tank looking good. But like others said I have read they like being in larger groups.

Ignore the inch per gallon rule. It's really only used to help newbies not to overstock their tanks to start off with.

I would not put a male betta in to a community tank. Specially w/ fish that could nip its tail or vice versa. If you want a betta, your best bet would be to just get it its own seperate tank.. 3gal+ filtered and heated.
